Yellow Wallpaper

So this week I saw Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" for the first time, which yes is a little late and, yes, it sounds irrelevant but it does have something to do with what we're going to discuss in this journal. The whole reason I decided to watch the movie is because recently I've become fascinated by cabin fever, the psychological phenomenon ( Read more... )

I like how you compared "The Yellow Wallpaper" to "The Shining." I've never seen the movie, but I do know it's about a guy that goes crazy and he says things like "heeeeere's Johnny!" I wrote my short story paper over "The Yellow Wallpaper." I agree that the husband definitely contributed to her insanity. He kept denying her her freedoms. For instance, he wouldn't let her write or walk around. All she could do was sit in a terrible room with ugly wallpaper.

I also thinks it's interesting that the husband wouldn't let her write and the doctor told her to stay in bed. Maybe not, but I think if I was ever crazy I might know what would help me, such as, getting my emotions out by writing..? I think it could have been a good thing, but then again, I'm no doctor..

I fully agree the husband contributed to her insanity. Instead of listening to her, he shoved her in a room, even having a babysitter for her sometimes and when she started to complain he simply gave her more medication.

I think that she was sane in the beginning, just worn out from a pregnancy, birth and initially dealing with a baby until that baby was taken away from her too. I agree that spending too much time in that room and following her husbands advice to rest too much drove her to insanity. Work and interaction with people is a better cure for sadness. I do wonder about the motives of her husband. I also think that the house they rented was an abandoned sanitarium not a nice old house.

I don't think that her husband was actually trying to make her go crazy, I think he did it without realizing it, although he very well could have been. But I think that she definitely went crazy because her husband made her stay in the room the whole time and not do anything else.
