Rookie Mistakes

Thirty minutes into the fourth day at my new job as Director of Operations at the Catholic Student Center, I found myself sifting through the contents of a dumpster.

Let me back up. The new job-it’s a newly created position, and my only boss is the extremely busy Father Gary, so I basically have no guidance at all. I basically spent ( Read more... )

I think I'm on your side on the disposal of old documents escapade. Did you look to see what you were throwing away? Did you have any indication that the former occupant of your office was ever coming back for these documents?

You state "don't throw away stuff that's not yours." I think an "except if it's somebody's stuff that no longer works at the organization you're working at" clause is in order, too. I mean, are you supposed to keep those documents around in perpetuity? Unless they were somehow marked or organized in such a way that they appeared to be "permanent records" as opposed to "leftover piles on somebody's desk," I say your "good riddance" attitude was the right one.

Okay, so about the stuff I was throwing away...the big problem was that I through away some of Linda's papers that I shouldn't have. Yes, they were dated, but I really had no business going into her office. I just got in a cleaning frenzy, and I couldn't stop! However, I had no problem throwing away the disorganized stuff that belonged to the previous occupant of my office.

So you're an advocate of an actual day of grievances? Interesting concept. I don't know if I could handle the onslaught of criticisms, though.

But thanks for starting anyway :). Your grievance is a good one, and I'll address it in the blog this week.

So was it your office or Linda's office? Or was it both? If it's "yes" to the latter, I think therein lies the issue.

I know the party was last night, but I still think you should gather people up and lift up somebody's car. It would bring people together after all those grievances. Think about it for next year and maybe I'll show up.
