VH1 BEHIND THE MUSIC / E! TRUE HOLLYWOOD STORY: The Rise and Fall of Randolph Community Theater

Jun 25, 2006 19:43

I suppose there just comes a time in everyone’s lives when they grow out of things, like a great pair of shoes or a nice pair of jeans. and then people discover a better pair of shoes, perhaps a more expensive pair, that fits them a lot better, and is perhaps a better style for their evolving age. And while you wore that dingy old pair of shoes, ( Read more... )

Randolph Theatre Company, or Randolph Community Theatre, is exactly what it is; a COMMUNITY theatre. Obviously it doesn't even come close to professional theatres and/or broadway ( ... )

I will say this, in regards to the comment I made in Amal's live journal... it was not a reference to EVERY SINGLE person who is in the show, it is just in reference to Amals situation and roles which she had auditioned for. I apologize if you or anyone else took it as a personal attack, but my generalization of the situation was just that, how i felt about everything as a whole.

So kudos to those who made it, and dont loose your pride, just remember where some of us came from before we got those leads, and how hard a lot of us "old teens" worked to get to the parts we had.

Yea, it was "only" community theater, but it was OUR theater, our art, our design, or lives, our hearts. I remember when I started working with Connie when I was a child. Looking up to the older actors, willing to go to any length to prove you had what it takes to make it as a lead character, or even as THE lead itself. I joined when I was very young, younger than some even nowadays, and I still feel as if though I as well as many others were forced out before our time. We did some amazing things on those stages, and we had the potential to do SO much more. I know I have never said it before, but I was proud of seeing you in Les Mis playing Javert, the role that I myself always dreamed of playing. I know I'm only a few years older than you, but for so long I had seen you as the little kid who played Snoopy and Lefou, even when we all made it to Grease together. I saw you in Les Mis and I saw you as someone who wasnt a little kid anymore. I saw you as an equal on the stage, and someone I would have been proud to play apart rolls with ( ... )

AWWW DAVE! Thanks a lot for understanding! You are definetly the original product of Connie, hahaha you go back in theatre history to basically before I was born, lol! I can't express how much I appreciate your respect and how much I appreciated working with you on stage for a good majority of my theatre life. You couldnt be more right about Connie. She is an amazing woman who has done so much for the theatre community and I cannot thank her enough, because as you said, we are truly products of her creativity.

Well I hope all is well, thanks for reading and understanding! Keep in touch man!!

I feel you. anonymous July 10 2006, 16:07:53 UTC
This is Brian Kenerson, I don't have livejournal anymore so I have to comment anonymously. Anyway, I just want to say that of all the people I know from Randolph Theater you are the most experienced and other people don't understand what professional theater is like. I thought I did, but I didn't untill recently. My voice teacher used to work on Broadway so his shows are Equity level shows. Right now we're doing Wicked and it's AMAZING!! We just finished Rent which was equally AMAZING!! That's not the point of my comment, but I guess all I wanted to say is I think that you are a very talented person and I'm sorry that all that shit happened between us. It was immature and I'm happy that we're both doing our own thing now. I hope you have a very succesful career and I wish you the best in the future.

Your essy above regarding community theater anonymous August 17 2006, 19:12:08 UTC
WHo ever told you that community theater was theater at its best mis-lead you. I am disappointed in your condemnation of RCT because its purpose is not to probide professional theater to participants but to provide an opportunity for as many as are interested in testing their wings so that they can make the appropriate decisions as to whether to go forward into the "business". The downfall, as you call it, of RCT unfortunately was a political upheaval we are still recovering from and may never fully recover from. Politics makes bad bedfellows and the new rec director is a neophite at anything "theatrical" so we continue to do the best we can with the limited non-support of the town. THe change in name was an effort to provide a better marketing vehicle which has worked to some degree but the absence of interest by the townspeople of this town has caused the production company to fall on a precious few volunteers and is breaking the back of most of them. As for YOU, noone ever lead you to believe you were going to be a ( ... )

Unfortunately I Disagree anonymous April 3 2007, 18:42:37 UTC
I agree that there has been major changes to RCT/RTC over the past 5-6 years...some of them have caused a hiccup in how things are run and how things are presented. At times, it's frustrating to see the lack of organization and the lack of support because there's such an abudance of talent gracing the stage. But don't be mistaken...there is not one person on that stage that feels that the productions we are presenting are in any way professional. It's community theatre...it's an outlet for another 10 year old to get his or her feet wet on the stage...it's an outlet for that working mother to spend some quality time with her kids that they'll always remember...it's an outlet for that singer who wont make it professionally to participate in an area of interest...it's an outlet for that working professional to participate in something that they adore but decided not to make a career out of...it's an outlet for people to go and see off Broadway shows at more than a fraction of the cost, supporting their town, friends and family. Yes ( ... )

It is amazing that almost one year later this discussion is re-surfacing. In actuality this entry, or essay if you will, was geared toward a few individuals who were taking the dramatic politics of the Randolph Theatre Company a little to seriously. In an attempt to ease their confusion, I simply wrote this entry as a reflection of my journey through out the theatre community, and to illustrate where and how I went about pursuing my aspirations as a performer, and to perhaps offer an outlet and mere suggestions to how someone else with similar dreams and goals can move forward in this business ( ... )
