Blue eyes, clear as the brightest summer sky, framed with long elegant black lashes that kissed a tanned, flawless face.

That was Harry’s first impression of seven-year-old Matthew.

When their eyes met, he felt…something. Like his destiny had called out to him again. That once more he would be called upon to save someone. A young boy this time, orphaned by the war. Seven years old and he’d already seen more of war and death and destruction than was good for him.

His breath hitched softly and compulsively his hand gripped Draco’s tighter as he dragged his gaze reluctantly from the boy and turned to meet concerned grey eyes.

“He’s the one,” Harry whispered.

“Are you sure?” Draco asked, nervously. “Are you sure we are doing the right thing? What if…what if I’m a terrible father, Harry?”

Harry’s hand rose to cup Draco’s cool cheek. He could feel through the pads of his fingers the minute trembling of his boyfriend.

“You won’t be,” Harry replied confidently, but then his face dropped. “I thought we discussed this, I thought you wanted this as much as I do.”

“I do,” Draco sighed, leaning in and resting his forehead on Harry’s. “I’m just scared that…I don’t want to be like my father, Harry.” There was real concern on Draco’s face and that proved to Harry that Draco would be a good father.

Harry drew him closer into a tight embrace, looking into his face and speaking earnestly. “You could never be like him. You have a heart,” he said, meaning it. They had been together for years now, almost as long as little Matthew had been alive. “We’re in this together, and whilst you can be a spoilt brat at times,” Harry grinned to show he was kidding, just as Draco’s eyes widened, “together, we’re unbeatable.”

“Ok,” Draco breathed, nodding and glancing over to Matthew who was sitting quietly at a table alternately looking at a picture book and up at Harry and Draco. “He’s the one, then? What makes him different than the others?”

Shifting to look at Matthew, but keeping Draco in his arms, Harry smiled. “I have no idea, it just feels right. Let’s talk to him and see what happens.”

As Draco nodded, the quiet voice of the Matron of the Orphanage, spoke beside them. “He’s very quiet and he enjoys puzzles.”

Both of them walked towards Matthew and squatted down to his level.

“Hello, Matthew,” Harry smiled at the boy, to be rewarded with a cool, interested look.

“Hello,” Draco echoed. Harry could tell Draco was still nervous.

“Would you like me to read you the story?” Harry asked. He was fairly sure that Matthew knew how to read this book, but there was something comforting about being read to. He’d often listened while Aunt Petunia had read to Dudley, and even though he knew she had not been reading to him, Harry always closed his eyes and imagined that she was. And he felt comforted.

Matthew nodded and pushed his book towards Harry. He shared a look with Draco and indicated that they go and sit on the couch.

When they were settled, Matthew between the two of them, Harry began to read. He noticed that Matthew’s thumb had slipped in his mouth as he read.

The story was about a spotted dog, funnily enough, called Stripes. Stripes didn’t fit in anywhere and was always getting into trouble. Draco laughed at the humorous antics of the dog and soon, Matthew was leaning into Harry’s side, happily listening to the story, amusement in his eyes.

When Harry reached the part about Stripes finding a place just for him, with people that loved him, Matthew surprised them both by clambering up onto Draco’s lap and snugging against his chest, thumb still firmly planted in his mouth.

Draco was looking at Harry wide eyed and his mouth had dropped open. Tentatively, as though Draco was scared that he might do something wrong, his arm went around the small boy on his lap, a look of wonder on his face.

Harry just smiled and moved closer to Draco, so that they were pressed close to each other and continued the story, knowing that all three of them had found a place just for them, with people that loved them.
