Had a fun weekend, with just a touch of melancholy. Went down to my Grandma's house (AKA The Farm, as it is known within my family) for the annual "Farm Clean-Up". This is a day where most of the extended family on my dad's side gets together and helps clean up my grandmother's place from the winter. Lots of lawn mowing, weed pulling, junk clearing ( Read more... )

So that's where you were all day yesterday. I suggest you stop by karaoke tonight if you can only for a while. I have two (2) Sopranos tapes to give you.

I just might have to do that. I need to give Carl back his passport too, so that will give me another reason to come out.

i know how you feel. the house my mom grew up in rural mankato had been in the family for a good 30 years or so. i say had because my Uncle who know lives on that property tore down the old house and built a new one. the property is just not the same anymore. that old house was filled with lots of memories for me too....

The family is kind of hinting at my uncle Greg that he should move in there. He is retired and lives alone in Red Wing, so we all think he would be a good person to be a "caretaker" for the old place - at least it would give him something to do with his time! At any rate, they won't even try to sell the house for at least a year, if ever.

Last summer, we cleaned up my (mother's) family's cabin, which my grandfather designed and built (only about twenty years ago, but still ...), to prepare it for sale. My family is so widely dispersed that they can't really make use of it much anymore, and my grandparents are physically unable to maintain it; so we knew it was the right thing to do. But I definitely understand the whole "end of an era" sentiment.

Yeah, it's sad. But the change will be for the best, mainly for my uncles. Since my uncle Joel's condition has worsened in recent years, he has come to rely on my grandmother more and more for his mobility. Not too many years ago, he was able to drive a car by himself. Now he can only walk and stand for short periods of time. As my grandma said to me this weekend, she will miss the farm, but Joel deserves to have a life. Moving into a wheelchair accessible house in a town where they know everybody will open life up for Joel and Troy - they are really excited.

Say -- this is unrelated to your post, but could you look through the van that you guys took to Winnipeg and see if you can locate our camera? Cullen misplaced it somewhere between our house and, uh, Canada, and I'm a little anxious about it :{
