Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Beyond’s only noteworthy ability is that which the shinigami eyes grant him -- that is, the power to see a person’s real name and lifespan. While a human normally has to trade half of their life to a shinigami to obtain the eyes, Beyond is an exception to the rule as he was naturally born with them, though the reasons for this are never fully delved into aside from speculation given by the narrator of Another Note (Mello) that a shinigami may have dropped their eyes into the mortal world similar to how Ryuk dropped his Death Note. This power is absolute; Beyond is able to see a person’s real name regardless if they use an alias along with the exact time of their death, though the person in question must be visually recognizable for it to work, not obscured by shadow or masked. This even extends to being able to view a name/lifespan of a person recorded on video or photographed.
Additionally, the power of the eyes has also supernaturally augmented his own sight and has given Beyond flawless 3.6 (20/10) vision.
Weapons: Beyond is entering the game with the clothes on his back, his natural abilities--the shinigami eyes and his intelligence--and nothing more. Given his talent for improvisation, it won’t be intensely difficult for him to find weapons.
History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: Beyond‘s life can be summarized in his
article at the Death Note wiki, though it skimps on several details behind his life before the events of Another Note.
Most of Beyond’s early life remains a mystery, but what we do know is that he grew up surrounded by death and the knowledge that absolutely everyone in the world will die. Born naturally with the eyes of a death god, Beyond was able to see the lifespans of his parents count down; he knew the exact time when his father would be beaten to death by an armed thug and he knew when his mother would die in a train crash shortly after, leaving him completely alone. It didn’t take long for him to attract the attention of the famous inventor Quillish Wammy, who took the orphaned Beyond in at his orphanage for gifted children -- Wammy’s House. As the second child to be reared within the orphanage, he was given the name “B” and told that his new purpose would be to be as a Backup; a copy of sorts to L, the world famous, genius detective.
For the next several years of his life, he was raised in L’s shadow during a time where Wammy’s House was still new and experimenting with the concept of creating a double of L that would carry on his name. Needless to say, the pressure was tremendous; the first child, A, snapped and committed suicide, leaving a deeply disturbed Beyond behind to pick up the pieces. Eventually, the wayward and deviant B followed by running away from the orphanage and traveling to America with the single minded purpose of crushing L by becoming his opposite -- a great criminal that would present the detective with a crime he could never solve, immortalizing him as the man who defeated the legendary detective. To accomplish this, he began to cut a bloody swathe across LA. His exploits were known as the Wara Ningyo Murders, dubbed so for the straw dolls left at the crime scenes, and characterized by the grisly fashions in which the victims were killed. Naturally, this caught L’s attention and he responded accordingly by sending in a young FBI agent known as Naomi Misora to act as his eyes and ears.
Then things got
weird. Point in Canon: Beyond is taken shortly before he’s about to complete his final murder -- himself. Before he finds himself pulled into Siren’s Port, he’ll be preparing to drench himself in gasoline and strike a match at the novel’s climax as Naomi begins to race to his location before he manages to kill himself.
Character Personality: Beyond Birthday is, first and foremost, a very unsettling person. Even at face value he has the tendency to appear very offputting with mannerisms that go just a little bit beyond quirky; he enjoys lapsing into seemingly irrelevant rants right in the middle of a conversation, evidently believing that a discussion pertaining to his favorite retro manga is more important than the one at hand, and he seldom filters himself from speaking very bluntly even when it’s not appropriate. With zero regard for personal space or even his own dignity, it isn’t uncommon to see him clambering about on all fours or sitting up hunched over, drawing his knees up in a way that would make even a contortionist envious, so it may come as a surprise to learn that his eccentric behavior stands in stark contrast to his brilliant mind. Analytical, Beyond is incredibly gifted at picking up on little details that others most oftentimes miss and using his keen powers of deduction to come to conclusions that, while usually elaborate, most often tend to be completely accurate and perceptive. He’s the sort of person you could easily imagine as a detective or private investigator.
The downside to all of this is, tragically, that Beyond is as insane as he is intelligent with a superiority complex to match. His earliest memories were of death; naturally born with the shinigami eyes, Beyond was able to know a person’s name and date of death before he was even introduced to them, strangers on the streets, what few friends he may have had, and even his own parents. As one might expect, this left a tremendous imprint on his psyche and he grew up gradually becoming obsessed with death and, eventually, the famous detective L. Under the strain of being groomed as a perfect successor (or “Backup” as B would become known for), he came to the conclusion that if he could not replace L, he would surpass him in every possible way as the world’s greatest criminal. As a serial killer, he’s brutal, cruel and clinically detached from his victims; his lack of sympathy may be attributed to the fact that the people he targets are fated to die the same day through other means, but it certainly doesn’t impact his ability to pull off incredibly ferocious murders executed partly out of simple curiosity to see what would happen if he were to try something different, such as attempting to see if it’s possible for a person to hemorrhage internally without rupturing any organs. With an eerily calm exterior, a grandiose sense of self-worth that borders on narcissism and a talent for manipulation, Beyond displays all the characteristics of a psychopath.
Paradoxically, his obsession with L leads him to model himself after him down to his base appearance; he dresses in clothing similar to L, a long-sleeved white shirt and baggy blue jeans, and even adopts the detective’s infamously slouched posture. Like L, he displays an unhealthy affinity for sweets (in particular, jam) and is characterized by looking sleep-deprived. Like much of his external façade, it’s all an act; he’s been shown to apply copious amounts of foundation and makeup to himself to ensure that his appearance is as close to his object of obsession as possible.
Life for Beyond is simple -- ruin L by surpassing him, giving him an unsolvable crime that would leave the detective shamed and cowering from the shadow of the once successor turned superior. It’s what his world perpetually revolves around and he’s willing to do anything to accomplish it, even if it comes down to destroying himself.
