My kitty, Gorilla, used to be a stray like that. We just left food out and she eventually got used to us. She's not too smart. I had to go out in the middle of a freaking hurricane to find her and bring her back in.
Chances are the kitty outside, unless s/he is a housecat (which they very might well be since it has a collar), is infinitely more scared of you than you of it. But if you don't want to let it in the house (doubt it'll come in anyway), I suppose the box was your best option. When I have to leave on vacation, I line a box with an old baby blanket or some old rags for the cat.
You might want to consider leaving the kitty clean water along with the food. Just a thought.
Happy new year.

It's definitely a house cat. I'm no expert on cat body language, but the way it ran up to the door and kind of sat right in front of it made it seem like it wanted to come inside. There is a couple who live almost next door (don't know exactly where) that go outside walking with their cats everyday.
