On the plane here I watched two British comedies[1]. Both featured self-centred and shallow men doing self-centred and shallow things to get into excruciatingly embarrassing situations while their attractive wives looked on, smiled and did naughty things to them in bed [2 ( Read more... )

One of the best films in recent times?! I wanted to walk out of that film from about 5 minutes after it started! I stuck around until the end thinking surely it would get better.. but it didn't.

I think you were blinded by your man-crush! Colin Farrell is a really.. really bad actor. :(

I love the muted dialogue, the saturated colours and the hostage scene in the trailer is one of my fav scenes ever.

I'll grant you that all the fucking around on the boat with the bad guy's wife or whatever was a waste. But the rest was gold.

You make a worthy point, but...man with football in the groin had a football in the groin!

Yeah and "Accidental Racist" has uncomfortable moments of real racism, but that doesn't make it okay!

Which English comedies are we talking about here? The typical American comedy scenario sounds similar sans the (Englishy) embarassing situations. That is, self centred pricks insulting their wives and family, their family insulting each other, pretty much everyone going for it.

There's a time and place to watch smart people doing smart things, I'd say that's being a toddler and watching your parents how to tie shoelaces and brush teeth. After that, your spirit gets you through life.

By the way, I found Happy Feet the other night incredibly insulting to my intelligence. I remember being a kid going to friends houses watching these kids films and finding them insulting to my intelligence - especially comedic Kids Films. My kids will be watching stuffy English comedies.. oh wait I am turning in to my parents.

lithium_michael would be able to comment more on animation. I think a lot of animated films are just packages for the animation and the story is secondary. I could recommend 'The Incredibles' as a cool animated film, but it's about superheroes so of course I would!

Like I say to ol' Lithium below, I kinda confused my message. I really did mean those comedies of embarrassment.

Spilling coffee on a corpse? Hilarious. Mistaken identity then being angry at the person who you mistook for someone else? Genius. Being a moron yet successful and not spat at in the street? Laff riot.

When the - admittedly pirated - copy of Happy Feet my girlfriend was watching [I lasted 15 minutes] finished I stood up, ejected the DVD, broke it in two to try and stop people accidentally watching it in the future. So, what I mean to say is this "I know the feeling!"

I also felt the same way about cartoons as a child - especially singing in cartoons! Theme songs, musical numbers... my ears would turn bright red and I'd want to tell every adult in the room "I don't like it for these bits!"

Ah, sweet neurosis!

The comedy you describe in paragraph one sounds like The Flintstones, or The Honeymooners, or like just about every Adam Sandler film I've had the misfortune to see 5 minutes of, you know?

Also: I have endless bad things to say about the Boosh since series three. Stupid is one of them.

Yeah, you're right I went off topic.

I'm attacking in particular the comedies that seem to be as happy making you laugh as they are making you want to disappear into the couch. I know the dumb man/beautiful wife formula is ancient, but these shows had the added extra of drawn out moments of uncomfort caused by pig-headedness and sheer arseholmanship.

Whatever you say about Boosh at least it's not Little Fucking Smashface Britain.

Yeah, I was just being a jerk. I know what you mean though. Fuck the Office and Curb, I tend to think all those comedies - including the previously mentioned - are just robbing from the grave of Fawlty Towers.

Boosh sucks now, but it was once amazing. Little Brittan has always wallowed in the mediocre, so I hardly hold it to the same standards - and if that offends your little Boosh loving world just take your hands of the keyboard and yell "It's an outrage!" just like Tony Harrison did 40,000 times in series 3. =]
