What is the doctrine of original sin?

The idea is that Adam and Eve were originally sinless, and should have lived in happy innocence in the Garden of Eden, possibly forever. But because they disobeyed God and ate the Forbidden Fruit, they and all their descendants are tainted forever by sin. Therefore no matter how good and saintly a human being is, he is still a sinner, incapable of fully pleasing God and deserving Eternal Life. God sent Christ, who is God and therefore sinless, to voluntarily take the punishment that everyone except he deserves, paying the price for humanity’s Original Sin and allowing people to be forgiven and go to Heaven. This interpretation is not actually there in the Genesis story, but both Catholicism and Protestantism are firmly based on it, each in its own way.

Ira Gershwin, who wrote lyrics for his brother George, created an encore verse for “It Ain’t Necessarily So” (from the opera Porgy and Bess) which critiques this doctrine in five pithy dialect lines:
