Somehow, I manage to use both approaches AT THE SAME TIME. I spot-clean when passing through to let out the dogs or heat things in the microwave, but then periodically I must CLEAN ALL THE THINGS (in the kitchen).

Sorry you've had such a hectic time of it. Hope you're at least feeling better!
