Hahaha. Not

I just went over to look at that fan fiction survey that's whipping up a frothy kerfuffle. Didn't look at the survey itself, which I don't intend to take, just browsed the comments. ETA The survey's down now while they lick their wounds, I guess ( Read more... )

I'm just shocked this hasn't ended up on fandom_wank yet.

To be honest, I didn't realize that fanfiction included novels and novellas.
Well, there's a man who knows of what he speaks.

I guess we should eliminate a few categories on the LMFA -- and all of the Gen side as they don't really care about that.

And someone needs to tell all the epic writers' group members on the JC forum at theforce.net. Some had fics going that went past the 300,000 word mark.

(I don't want to know what DarthIshtar's total lifetime Star Wars fan word count is, but I'd be surprised if she hasn't passed the million mark by now.)

I co-wrote a fic over 8 months that ended up longer than War and Peace; 800,000 words.

They already have my scorn but after this question

46. How many fan fiction stories (not including drabbles) do you estimate you've written?

they have my contempt.

Drabbles count, you dipstick!

And this:

48. Do you write OTP (One True Pairing) stories? (These are stories with a preferred pair of characters who you believe belong together romantically.)

Plz not to be explaining fandom terms when you know you're speaking to people who know more about it than you do. Thnx.

Good grief! What a stupid thing to try to use fanfiction for. I shouldn't be shocked but of course I am. So condescending -- that thing they said to the person who informed them about novels and novellas (loved her explaining the terms to them by word count and the Nebula Awards!) and them "congratulating" her on being a published author by saying it shows she loves "stories." Hey, I love chocolate a lot, I might become a professional chocolatier! If I do a lot of "hard work."

When I was doing ConneXions, several people wanted to attend because they were doing research on fanfiction. I refused to sell them memberships. The con was a time for fans to get away from the real world and enjoy themselves fannishly, not to be used as lab rats.

They're relaly, really offensive people; some of the comments they've been making about slashers are just insulting.

They so obviously don't get fanfic when they ask questions about what character you identify with, what character would be your ideal mate and whether you have a male or female icon "representing you" on LJ posts.

It's like those who assume if you write slash you must be a lesbian. Or that you're sex starved. Or don't know male anatomy... sigh.

My SAT scores? I'm afraid I don't remember since it's been over 40 years since I took them... and why do they matter anyway, especially since so many in fandom aren't American?

Plus, it finally hit me, re their book title: "netporn"? I wouldn't classify fanfiction as netporn. It can be pornographic, it is on the net but even if it has erotic content, it is in many ways totally unrelated to what constitues porn on the net (paid sex sites, pics of nude girls or boys, webcams that show people peeing...). I wonder if they are "researching" communities of folks who peruse netporn (if there are communties of those folks) and if they are asking them questions which are just as offensive.

I've read some of the posts about methodology and what not but thought I'd reserve judgement for the time being while erring on the side of fandom.

I HAVE MADE UP MY MIND. OMG.

Yeah, given the things the man's been saying today about slashers, I'm not inclined to give him the benefit of any doubt.
