I'm watching my telecourse materials for nutrition and they keep showing people chowing down on giant fast-food burgers and stuff, all like, "DON'T EAT THIS SHIT, IT'S BAD FOR YOUUUUUUUU!"

I think a lot of the scare mongering about food starts at a health educator level-- I remember being told I should be giving my three year old son low-fat dairy products by the community health nurse. And I ripped into her: Lewis was underweight at that stage (he's still tiny, to be honest-- it's not that we don't feed him, he's just a picky eater and he's got a metabolism that seems to chew through energy like whoa), not to mention: he was three. I've gotten a little farther into the videos, and it seems like the burger thing was more about hyper-processed foods than anything. I'm in the section on lipids now and it's been pretty good about stressing that yes, fats are really fucking important for proper nutrition and functioning, and the section on carbohydrates was basically, "you need to eat these, NO SERIOUSLY, YOU NEED TO EAT THEM." So it's a little better than what I was originally worrying about, but it's still a little hyper-focused on weight loss and it's really starting to bug me. The textbook is a lot better than the videos (this edition is only about a year old, while the telecourse videos seem like they're from the 1990s), so at least there's that ( ... )

That's weird. My Mom always said eating crap food caused worms.

Frankly, I question her grasp of science.
