Okay, I have to admit it took a moment or two for me to 'get' this (in my defence it's still early in the morning here), but now that I do...that's really clever.
And disturbing, given the mindset behind such thoughts...Some people, most of them politicians, scare the crap out of me.
It's terrifying that, to justify his stance against abortion, a polician actually claimed that if it's "legitimate" rape a woman can't get pregnant because her body has "a way of shutting it out." Even more terrifying that his response to the backslash was "I didn't mean to say 'legitimate', that was a poor choice of words, I meant to say 'forceful'! A woman can't get pregnant if it's forceful rape!"
But the most terrifying thing of all is that people like him keep getting elected.
It all seems so pervasive too. The mayor of Toronto's niece included 'don't dress like a whore' as a 'tip' to avoid rape. I just can't fathom how and why some people think that line of thinking is in any way 'okay,' especially after the media attention given to slutwalk, which was motivated by the comments of a police officer in the same damn city. Rape culture, the desire to control women and their bodies...it all ties together in a gross misogynistic package.
People, politicians and the people, seem more reactionary than usual lately and it's revealing some really ugly things. It's a scary time to be a woman. Or poor...or gay...or an immigrant...
