I can make glass tubes.

Overheard from the street as I was getting ready for bed last night:

"Awesome! Leave your fucking girlfriend on fucking Somerville Avenue, prick!"
"Baby! Come on, get over here! Baby!"
"Go away!"
"Have a good life! Fucking cunt."

I'm loving that it's moving season and I get to stay right here in my awesome apartment. I drove a car and a piano halfway across the country for one J's move, and I helped the other J pack a kitchen, yes, but I don't have any of the stress for myself. And my kitchen-packing help was largely motivational speeches along the lines of "pack 2 more boxes, and we can watch another episode of Sports Night." (She emailed me this morning to ask whether I might have packed her phone, with a follow-up "never mind" 13 minutes later.)

The drive through eleven states included, in no particular order: a panoramic vista of the Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairesville, Ohio; Waffle House; 2 of the greater Allentown area's 7 historic covered bridges; Jeeves and Wooster on PBS; Bill Bryson on tape; Steak'n'Shake; an extensive discussion of campus tours of small liberal arts colleges; and driving stealthily by two great-aunts' houses.

We drove through 10 construction sites that barely slowed traffic, even the ones in Connecticut on a weekday, then spent almost an hour in the fucking Big Dig, with no visible cause.

Things I brought back from St. Louis with me, because they're hard to transport otherwise, or because they were going to be thrown out to free up closet space:
  • Six vhs tapes of X-Files, from seasons 2-4, taped off of FX (I convinced myself that I didn't need all 15 tapes, but then I was watching this video, with Mulder! To Subterranean Homesick Blues, which is awesomely brilliant! And I realized that I might have left the roof-of-a-moving-train episodes in St. Louis, which I hope I won't regret). So I've been popping in unlabeled tapes and having these conversations with myself like, ok, I don't really want to watch "Home" over dinner; let's see what's next on the tape - oh, icepick lobotomies! Hmm, I think I can handle that; it's only part of the episode.
  • This Edward Gorey poster.
  • One Super Nintendo Entertainment System (formerly belonging to grumpy_sysadmin), with six games, including F-Zero.
  • This Chagall poster, which I need to frame.
Flaky moment of the day: in the middle of writing this, I went out to buy toilet paper, because, well, we ran out, and I managed to buy paper towels instead, which I realized once I was on my way out of the store. At least I noticed before I got home and opened them?

Anyway, the reason I have the Chagall poster is that my father was pretty flaky himself: he had one copy, thought it had faded from sunlight over time, and bought a replacement. When he got the new one home, he saw that the colors were, in fact, identical.

It's all chilly and fall-like, so I'm getting excited about the new school year (my last semester! I bought gel pens!), and the new tv season, and the not being responsible for any seasonal events or attractions.

And now, I'll go help roommate-for-not-much-longer study for the GMAT. By which I mean watch Project Runway reruns with him and eat melon.
