Dusk was settling across the horizon as Daniel took the exit ramp off the highway. "We're almost there. Sam lives just a few minutes away."
Janet yawned, lifting her head off the window and glancing at him. "I know where Sam lives," she murmured. "I've driven here enough times."
"Why didn't we tell Jack we were going to do this in DC?" asked Elizabeth tiredly, her head lolling back against the seat. "DC at Thanksgiving is nice."
"You like DC any time of year, honey," Janet said, glancing over her shoulder.
"That's because DC is always beautiful," said Elizabeth.
"I know," agreed Janet.
"I hate DC," muttered Daniel. "Except for the Smithsonian."
"I know that too, honey," said Janet, reaching over and patting him on the leg. "We're all going to be nice, and polite, and we won't fight when we get there, right?"
"Of course not," said Daniel quickly.
Elizabeth crossed her arms and stuck her tongue out at Daniel. "If he behaves."
"Please don't start," said Janet.
"No time to," said Daniel, his voice falsely bright as he turned into Sam's driveway. "We're here!"
"Hooray," said Janet dryly.
Daniel beeped the horn, and the lights flipped on as Jack opened the door.
"Hey, Jack," said Daniel.
"You dropped your phone in the Nile?" asked Jack.
"Who told you that?" asked Daniel, his voice coming out with a slight whine.
Elizabeth stepped out of the backseat and slammed the door. "It wasn't me," she said.
"Elizabeth!" Jack glanced at Daniel. "Daniel didn't tell me you were coming."
"I sent an e-mail," said Janet, unlocking the trunk. "Didn't you get it?"
"Of...course, I did," said Jack slowly.
Janet rolled her eyes. "Sam's got more guest bedrooms than she can handle," she said, hauling a suitcase out of the trunk and handing it over to Elizabeth, then pulling her suitcase out. "Liz can have the guest bedroom next to ours."
'Liz?' mouthed Jack wordlessly.
Daniel just shrugged.
"Daniel, be a gentleman and get your girlfriend's bags," said Jack testily. "Sam ordered dinner, and there's ice cream."
"I can get my own bag," said Janet. "Liz, you have everything, right?"
Elizabeth nodded. "I'm ready."
"Right, you have your own bags," said Daniel. "Are you sure--"
"We're sure," said Elizabeth shortly. "Let's just get inside."
Janet dragged her suitcase up the stairs, then gave Jack a one-armed hug. "Everyone's inside," he said, jerking his head at the door. "Welcome home, Frasier."
Janet smiled wryly. "Thanks, Jack."
