Daniel's Apartment

Janet unlocked the door to Daniel's apartment and slipped inside. She had two very large cups of coffee in her hand from the Perk, and hopefully Daniel would be around for his before it got cold.

Daniel was sprawled out on the sofa, watching the television. He looked up and smiled. "Hey, there."

Janet grinned. "Hey," she said, her eyes lighting up. "I brought coffee." She came over to the sofa and held a cup out for him.

"You're a godsend," Daniel grinned, sitting himself back up and taking the offered cup. He inhaled deeply. "How are you?"

"No, I just know you too well," said Janet. She let her backpack slide to the ground with an audible thud and sighed in relief. "I'm good. Better now that classes are over and I'm here. You?"

"That would be nice," said Janet, smiling again. "You're very relaxing, even if your apartment is never really going to be uncluttered."

"He needs a keeper." Janet rolled her eyes. "He wanted a book on how to rewrite his own genetic structure to turn himself into an animal and then back again. Which, to give you credit, you've never tried to do, but you're not a freshman." She might have been a bit amused by all of this. Secretly, of course. Unless you knew her really well.

"In other words, it would be payback time for the reception that article of yours received," said Janet. Now she was very obviously amused.

"I tried to unclutter it," Daniel nodded firmly. "But it never seems to go very well."

"Rewrite his own... of course I'd never try and do that. Any genetic structures I wanted to rewrite I'd get you to help me with." He might have missed the point there.

Daniel snickered. "It'd be great, and I'd be ahead of them all and be the authority on all the new cultures we've discovered. And best of all, I could finally prove to them that I was right all along and everything they've ever believed in is all lies!"

"You're always trying to unclutter things," said Janet. She sighed and straightened, then arched backwards to stretch her spine in the opposite direction from before. "You never manage to. Too many artifacts."

"Daniel!" exclaimed Janet. "You shouldn't try to rewrite your genetic structure, even if you did have my help. Human understanding of genetic manipulation is at the most basic, limited level, especially when you compare it to the advanced techniques of alien cultures." Not that she was incredibly jealous, not at all.

She reached back and patted Daniel's leg. "We'd all be public authorities on so many subjects if only they weren't classified, honey," said Janet. "But yes, you'd have been more right than everyone else. I'm sure eventually you'll be able to tell everyone."

"But I have less artifacts now than I did have before," Daniel pointed out. "So that's something, isn't it?"

"I'm not planning on doing anything to my own genetic structure," he assured her. "It's never even crossed my mind. Promise."

"I hope so. Or at least I do in one way. The other way I'm quite happy not being in the public eye, which is what will most likely happen."

"It's probably genetic." She shrugged. "And a reaction to seeing all of you in the infirmary so often. I feel bad that I can't be there right now to help out, whether it's getting better out there or not. Of course, if I were there, I'd feel horrible about leaving everyone who's here."

Janet lost it and started giggling. And blushing too. "We were really drunk," she said through her laughter.

"You'll get back there one day, I'm sure," Daniel nodded firmly. "Of course, as long as you want to that is, by then."

"Really, really drunk," Daniel agreed, bright crimson. "Itwasveryhotthough."

"I think I do, yes," said Janet. "But what are you going to do? If I go back there, that is."

Janet couldn't really think of anything to say to that. So she just nodded in agreement and smiled.

"I'll find something," Daniel said. "Maybe they'll take me back as an on-world consultant. Or if not, I'll look at the University of Colorado or something and just continue teaching."
