That was probably the only surprise, yeah. The first time he pulled out the pocket watch, I went "OH SHIT." I gotta give Rusty credit, sometimes his scripts are just nifty bits tied together with shoestring and tapdancing, but he's good at scripting those moments where everything we've seen coming all season falls together and everything goes all to hell.

I want this Jack to be the one that goes back to Torchwood Three! After all, his manpain has been solved now. He can go back to Torchwood and be all Awesome McFlirtypants and then maybe the show will really be worth watching. As long as he does not aim to become the Best of Them because that is clearly Toshiko.
