[Doctor Who] 6.03 "The Curse of the Black Spot"

May 07, 2011 15:48

Yes, I am WELL EARLY this week.

Meh. Perhaps it's because I went in not really expecting to be impressed, but . . . I wasn't impressed. Any other week this might have been a good episode, but it's sandwiched between "Day of the Moon" and something called "The Doctor's Wife" written by Neil Gaiman, it just has no hope of living up to its neighbors. Tiny little claustrophobic episode that fails to generate any dramatic tension and never really makes us care about the characters (well, except Avery, he was pretty good) with a requisite third act "but it's actually a SPACESHIP" timey-wimey technobabble twist once again ruined by the fact that they used it on Rory.

Not that I don't like Rory, it's just that they keep killing him and he keeps coming back, by this point "ONOES RORY IS DYING" has really lost its emotional impact. HIS NAME IS IN THE MAIN CREDITS, HE WILL BE BACK NEXT WEEK.

Hmph. I think I know how sache felt last week.

Anyway it's not the worst thing ever committed to film and it passed 45 minutes of my day quite nicely but bring on the Gaiman.

Specs count: okay I'm just beating a dead horse by now.
Hat count: 1, although we do not know whether the Doctor thinks it is cool or not (2 total)
Eye Patch Lady sightings: 1 (2 total)
Rory deaths: 1, drowning (4 total, 5 if you count the faked one in "Day of the Moon")
Amy: Still Schroedenpregnant.

Next week: Written by some guy named Neil Gaiman, you might have heard of him. I hear a lot of people think he's pretty cool. Although the last episode named "The Doctor's [Family Member]" was slightly meh and I never got the science to make any sense.

Still need Eleventh Doctor-era icons.
