I'm now a couple of fics past the 300 mark (not counting things that never made it to my LJ and therefore to my masterlist) and a couple of months past my third LJ anniversary. I think I'm overdue for a comment fic party

Hallowe’en sure plays a trick on Genevieve. Something quite different was supposed to happen. She was supposed to go into Heat, or maybe just keep on muddling along like the rest of the Betas. There weren’t any Alphas in her family, and she’d never had any of the signs of latent Alpha-ness. She’d been a girly-girl, hadn't been tomboyish or bossy, hadn’t broken any limbs doing stupid stunts on skateboards or jumping out of trees, hadn’t set any fires, hadn’t felt instinctively protective towards little Omega Dad. And there was no family history, as far as anyone knew. None. Nada. Zilch

Gen shrugged and headed to class to get on with the boring straightforwardness of her school day. Only everyone she met continued to surprise her in ways that were difficult to define. It wasn’t like she’d woken up in Bizarro World or anything, it was so much more subtle than that. Suddenly she respected most of her teachers less, and Mister Jacobs more. She came across a scuffle in the halls between Freddy Pie, who was enormous, and Paul Lister, who was scrawny, and felt the almost overwhelming urge to step in and protect Freddy. She had a strange urge to smack the lunch lady. It was all so weirdThe only person who didn’t seem to have magically altered overnight was Misha, who flopped down beside her on the carpet in the drama room as usual and just proceeded to be his standard funny charming zany self, almost as if he knew that was exactly what she needed

“I guess I should be glad I’m not in Heat.” It falls flat, and once she’s said it she can’t even see how she could have intended it as a joke. She can feel the first tendrils of a headache inching in behind her eyes. “It’ll take some getting used to.”
“Amen.”
“Thanks for this. Thanks for-not treating me like a leper or something.”
Misha’s smile is sadder this time. “I like you,” he says. “That hasn’t changed.”
After that, they sip their drinks in silence. He seems unsure what to say, and Gen? Gen has completely run out of words.
***“Nothing’s going to change,” Gen tells her Mom while they’re peeling and chopping vegetables for dinner. “Why should it

Gen grits her teeth and stalks back into the school building, determined to be the same kid she was yesterday. She ignores everyone in the halls, heads straight for class even though she’s bound to be early.
The day drags, all effort and no fun.
She does her best to be just as pleasant and helpful to Fipps and Davies as always, even though they suddenly seem like awful teachers and she suddenly feels a powerful urge to punch Fipps right in the smirk.
She has to fight tears when she looks at Mrs Lynch, though. The old bird had always seemed fragile and wise and just too damned nice to be allowed, but now she seems… almost like a favourite grandparent. Like kin. Like Gen should spend more time with her and help her out more and possibly pick flowers every day to brighten up her scratched and ancient teacher’s desk.
***Things have to change, Gen realises the next week at school, when a hand descends on her shoulder to pull her away from the delicious senior she has cornered against the lockers

“Oh, that. Well, I was in this big club with a lot of semi-naked sexy people sizing me up and inviting me to size them up, and it was really really difficult to get sex out of my head. So I tried to think of something that would put me off. But it turns out I don’t find the idea of being bent over something and fucked senseless off-putting at all.” He grins. “Which is really good knowledge to have, and I plan to put it to good use in the future. Frequently.”
“And he was okay with that? Even though he’s Omega?”
“They’re not all the stereotype. I don’t know that it’s, you know, a Thing, for Os to fuck As, but there’s sure a lot of Os who are in relationships with Betas, and you can bet the scent thing isn’t complicating things there. Like your parents. I mean, your Dad’s Omega, right? So if it was true that Os have gotta have knot, gotta be bottoms, how could that possibly work with your Mom?”
“Misha,” Gen says, as sweetly as she can manage, “I love you, but if you continue to speculate about my parents’ sex life I am

Gen’s nose, keener now that she’s had time to get used to the whole Alpha thing, detects her Dad’s scent before she’s halfway through scanning the arrivals hall-hugely crowded with families reuniting for Thanksgiving-for one or other of her folks. She makes a beeline for him, throws herself backpack and all into his arms.
He laughs and pats at her hair. “Hey, now. I missed you too, honey.” He extricates himself delicately, looks at her bag. “That all you brought?”
She shrugs. “I’m trying my hand at travelling light. I’ve heard it’s good for the soul.”
“I think you mean the spine.” He pats his pockets. “You wanna drive?”
Yeah, and that’s reason 4,692 she loves her dad.
***There is a Misha at her window, swaying gently in the wind. Gen shuts her bedroom door behind her, then rushes to let the idiot in before he can fall. She and the tree he’s scaled have a long and checkered history together, and she wouldn’t exactly trust it with her friends’ lives

“Yeah.” He sighs hard enough to ruffle his bangs. “Hey, you think one day, you and I could settle down with a nice Omega and have a lot of really awesome sex? And live happily ever after, of course

Oh my gosh! I loved every little bit of this. Gen's whole world changing with her new status/senses, and Misha's constant little reminders that he likes Gen and that hasn't changed since she's become an Alpha, and Misha sorta being Gen's alpha sensei (plus atypical alphas/omegas are my favorite sorts of alphas/omegas, so yay). And then him finally coming out with it after a long absence! And it being so sweet and cute, even though there's that little biological frission because this isn't quite how things are supposed to work.
I read it through three times already. And will probably re-read it quite a few times more. It makes me so happy! <3<3<3

I was actually just rereading that fic, trying to decide whether I should run it past a beta before putting it up in its own entry on my journal for all to read. Might just go ahead and do it now, that'll be easier to read if anyone takes the rec. :-)
