The smart thing would have been to put on jackets. It was raining in every city during that roadtrip and we knew there was a good chance it was pouring outside right that moment. But we went outside and by the time we got to the theatre to find the movie sold out, we were soaking wet and shaking.
The smart thing would have been to take a cab back, but we were laughing too much and having a good time, and there was a coffee place two blocks from the hotel that would be an ideal place to warm up.
The smart thing would have been to order good sobering bitter black coffee. Not that hot chocolate made with cream that made everything about that moment even sweeter. We should have had the black coffee and run back to warm up in our separate rooms. Not pushing a sleepy roommate out into the hallway so we could stay up as late as we wanted.
The smart thing would have been to stick to the rule about never dating a teammate. The smart thing would have been to stop drinking beers with him once I realized where it was headed. The smart thing would have been to hang up an hour ago, before this call put me in the poorhouse for good...
"We can make this the last goodbye," I say. "Might be easier to just end it. Never talk again."
"Okay," Raffi says. His voice is angry. He is daring me. He knows I can't.
"So Go... G..." I cough. "Goo... Good... Goodnight Raffi. Talk to you tomorrow. I love you."
I hang up before one of us can do the smart thing. It's never been the right thing for us anyways.
