As far as I can remember, I've never heard a helicopter called a "helo." But it's alllll over the fanfiction I read ( Read more... )

I've never been in a hospital that didn't smell like disinfectant, and I've been in a lot! Only the ER ever smelled of anything else, and that was only briefly when there was a specific reason for it.

Never heard of "helo", though. It's always either "helicopter", "chopper" or the name of the helicopter.

Well, it's entirely possible too that I work there and so I don't smell things as others do. I almost didn't add that part of the post because I kinda think that's part of it.

"Helo" has got to be a British term, surely?

In our family we say "helicopter," "chopper," (which may be confused for a motorcycle, if no context provided), and "whirlybird ( ... )

(I still think of it as "Hee-low." It just...looks like that.)

Okay, I find your descriptions of the OR fascinating. Not a place I normally wind up at work, so all new to me. (Well, had a couple of surgeries, but fortunately I wasn't awake to smell anything. Yipes.)

I've heard "heli" from a Brit when I was a kid, but never "helo." Is it just a Marvel thing?

I think Marvel's the only place I've seen it, come to think of it? Definitely recently that's about all I've been reading, so yeah.

There is a definite smell hospitals and doctor's offices have. It's not like rubbing alcohol or some strong cleaner. I don't know what it is. But it is a noticeable medical place smell.

I think I've heard 'helo' from actual military personnel. I can't swear to that though. I watch a lot of movies/tv with fictional military and I know a lot of former military in RL. I know I've actually heard the word 'helo,' not just read it. But, it might be a film-military thing, instead of a real-military thing. I've definitely got a military impression with it.

Seems to be a rather infrequent military thing. This whole thread is kinda funny. :)

I've noticed that our local walk-in clinic absolutely reeks of disinfectant and some kind of air freshener used to cover it. It's horrifying. Hospitals themselves usually smell of too-strong cleaning products and cheap hand soap, to me, with the occasional whiff of alcohol or urine. Not pleasant.
