Maters!

I was out watering tonight and I spied with my little eye -- two baby tomatoes!!

I actually have a shameful confession. There may be more tomatoes, but I can't tell, because it's got so much weed action. I just can't keep them under control. So my un-caged tomatoes sprawl all over creation, and hell if I know for sure.

MATERS!!!

My new Texas gardening trick is to poke holes in the bottom of a 2-liter soda bottle and plant it beside the seedling when I first put it in the ground, leaving it about 3" above the surface of the dirt, and then flatten all the Amazon boxes we've gotten all winter and pile them around the plant so thick not much water even gets through, and water through the bottle.

Oh, that's a fabulous concept -- I am clearly failing in my gardener duties vis-a-vis the weeds. I am hoping to get in this weekend, early when it's cooler, and weed the crap out of it, then lay down a good layer of mulch. But NEXT year, I'll put down cardboard, then a good layer of topsoil and compost. I have not been terribly organized this year. But 'maters!!!

I was too cheap to buy or make actual ollas pots, but it's a cool idea. I go through with a hose and fill upt eh 2-liter bottles, one at each plant and by the time I'm done they're dry, so I fill again and I'm done.
