my suggestion: once you get out of oregon (or soon before or after) take the coastal route down california. it is a longer drive, but i have a few reasons!
1. most of your planned trip is through the not-all-that-awesome desert of california. you are going to get all the desert you can handle (and more!) of extremely awesome (and some not-all-that-awesome) desert on your drive from LA to phoenix, during your stay in phoenix, and from phoenix to atlanta.
2. the coastal route of california is the most incredibly amazing ocean drive in the U.S., especially big sur, which will taunt you with its unpossessable beauty. you will also get to see some of the forest fire craziness.
3. you will get to drive by my house, and spend the night! my house is also a vipassanna meditation center.
4. the san francisco bay and the santa cruz-monterey bay.
