Conservative blogger Andrew Sullivan writes:

" ...The torture that was deployed against McCain emerges in all the various accounts. It involved sleep deprivation, the withholding of medical treatment, stress positions, long-time standing, and beating. Sound familiar?"

On the other hand, I once refused to move from a spot and had icy water dumped over my head for about half an hour... and I've been restrained against my will twice, once on the way to the hospital and once just tied to a stool in a way that prevented me from moving and left there for an hour (I REALLY needed to pee, it became an added source of pain). I've been hit once or twice, both times leaving bruises, and I've been screamed at by someone I trusted.

All of which was painful and degrading, and left a lasting impact on my psyche... but I would not consider myself to have ever been tortured, or even really abused, despite the fact that all of that happened when I was a child.

Why would you not consider these experiences torture or abuse?

I suppose because they lacked malice.

The events were spaced out by months and years, and were all because I was an impossible child and no one had the faintest clue how to cope with that. The water was because I refused to move, and short of real violence to move me it was the best they could come up with... it also didn't work. Being tied was because I was prone to violence, and the idea was to restrain me so I couldn't hurt myself or them or do anything else stupid (in the case of the stool they did actually leave me alone in the house while they and I calmed down, and that was more than a touch irresponsible, I'll admit). The hitting was the result of temper, and shouldn't have happened and should have been punished, but it was NOT systemic or done with malice, it was just a person beyond his breaking point. The screaming was actually the most abusive out of all of that, because the words themselves were chosen to wound.

I am not specifically pointing at McCain - if Obama's people insulted Geekdom I would be just as pissed at them - but this came up and I thought I would share it.

Something to look at in all this: Look at how often Obama (or Clinton) is called to task for something he (or she) has said and compare it to how often McCain has been.

I would not consider you being biased at all considering the virtual free pass McCain has been getting.
