An interesting note and something really good that came out of the bailout legislation

I was perusing the New York Times, which, contrary to what you might think, I do not read on a regular basis, and I found a couple of interesting articles.

Maverick is actually the name of a family who has been involved in progressive politics since the 1600's. I had no idea that was the origin of the word ( Read more... )

I'm not defending McCain/Palin's overuse of the term (I think of my Mom's description of Lars Ulrich of Metallica's constant use of the word "fuck" : "Wow, it's a noun, it's a verb, it's an adverb, it's a adjective...!"

And I can sympathize with the Maverick family. But their name is a noun in the dictionary.

And where is the James Garner or Mel Gibson hate? (film/tv Maverick?) :P

Yeah, McCain really does need to find another word. Especially when you add in the fact that James Garner is a Democrat.

I don't think the McCain/Palin ticket cares anymore what they say or where they get their words from, whether it is using the term "Maverick" or Heart's song "Barracuda" that people don't want them to use or using Obama middle name "Hussein" to try and invoke fear and hate. They see their chance of winning fading and they are deperately trying to win.

McCain is what he is. A Maverick is defined as a "a lone dissenter, as an intellectual, an artist, or a politician, who takes an independent stand apart from his or her associates." and that is McCain to a T. I'm still trying to figure how Obama keeps getting away with using the word change, when he is just another Daley-machine, Washington stuffed suit doing the same old thing.

I must disagree with you on this. >I< am a maverick - a dissenter, an intellectual and an artist who takes an independent stand. John McCain and Barack Obama are both mouthpieces of the ruling class and nothing they do is mavericky. Neither are the real solution to what's going on. The real solution is for the American People to choose freedom over lattes and responsibility over sensationalist news. The revolution will not be televised. :)
