“Sir, you can’t go back there. Sir...sir!” she waved frantically, trying her best to get the strange man’s attention.
“Annie, it’s me. You know me. Sam...remember?” Sam frowned, delicate lines creasing his forehead as his eyebrows knit together in their characteristic, worried fashion.
“I’m sorry, sir, but you must have me confused with someone else. Anyway, you can’t go in right now, the DCI and his DI aren’t to be disturbed...”
“DI? I’m his DI. DCI Gene Hunt and I’m DI Sam Tyler, transferred quite some time ago from C Division in Hyde. Look, I know I should have handled things differently between you and I, but while this is all very funny to you,I’d just like to please get on with my life. Please?” Sam hadn’t quite meant to let the torrent out like that, but the bottle couldn’t quite restopper itself and instead insisted on spilling all over the floor.
The woman called Annie smiled, adjusted her jumper, and then spoke very calmly and slowly, as though to a particularly stupid child. “You really must be mistaken, Mr. Tyler---Sam---I’m quite sure I’ve never met you in my life. Now, if you’ll just have a seat over here, I can see if the DCI wants to have a word with you in a moment?”
“Not gonna happen,” the slightly podgy, moustached man with the frenetically lazy, curly, thinning dirty gold hair spat, sizing up this newcomer.
“Ray, it’s me. Sam. I know you don’t particularly like me, but even you wouldn’t risk the Guv’s wrath like this---” he stopped short as Ray grabbed him and slammed him down into the nearest chair.
“Don’t. You. EVER. Call. Him. Guv. Understand?” he hissed, inching closer to Sam’s face with every syllable. Hot flecks of spittle served to drive the point home more thoroughly than any punctuation ever could.
“So you do remember me, Ray?” Sam finally managed, but only after Ray had backed off a few paces.
“Never seen you before in my life, and I’ll be only too happy to see the back of you. Don’t let the door hit you...” he leered toward his coworker, who was messily eating a sorry looking sandwich over a stack of filing folders.
“Chris. CHRIS. This has got to be a joke, right?” Sam’s eyes widened as he pleaded.
“Boss?” Chris began, but Sam didn’t let him finish.
“I KNEW it! Thank god for you, Chris. I KNEW you wouldn’t let me down!” Sam’s grin nearly split his face as he rushed forward, embracing the younger man in a gigantic bear hug.
Chris visibly stiffened, only just managing to wrest his sandwich up above the melee so that it didn’t get crushed.
“I’m afraid I don’t know you, sir. I was just asking the Boss here if he had any idea what you’ve been going on about,” Chris said, studiously avoiding eye contact as he jerked his head in Ray’s direction.
“Oh,” was Sam’s witty reply, and the only one he could think of. Without another word, he walked out.

Back at Sam’s flat, everything looked just as he’d remembered it, down to that same questionable stain on the hideously patterned wallpaper that adorned the place.
The phone rang, and he answered it automatically.
“Hello?”
“Sam? Can you hear me? Sam? Are you in there? It’s Mum. Oh Sam, I’ve missed you...” the woman sobbed, shattering Sam’s heart into a million, billion pieces.
“Mum? Mum, it’s me. Mum, I can hear you. Tell the doctors I can hear you. I’m in here, I’m trapped, but I’m going to find a way out and home to you, I promise.”
“Sam?”
“Mum, it’s me!”
“I don’t know how your mother raised you, young man, but it’s a terribly cruel joke you’re playing on a heartbroken mum who only wants her beautiful boy to come home again. I’ve never spoken to you before in my life,” the voice at the other end of the line admonished, very calmly.
The phone clunked heavily as it dropped from Sam’s hand and hit the floor.
“Now you’re all alone, just like you’ve always wanted!” the small blonde girl in the red dress smiled from the television as she reached out of the box and twisted the knob to “ON.”
