If you're looking to stay in the DC area, any of the following topics may be good local issues:

1. The rapidly changing demographics of the District and the suburbs as gentrification continues and poorer demographics who once populated the city now move into adjacent suburban areas.

2. The baseball stadium...'nuff said.

3. Marion Barry's continued iconic image in DC despite his lack of action on many important issues he has vocally supported. The man is an enigma.

A few ideas to get the ball rolling...

This may have been overdone but vampires in popular culture

There are more bookstores everywhere and more books being published but generally it seems that readership has decreased (according to some undisclosed source, that I can't remember)

Dating services in depth look at psychology behind them (I have three very different coworkers doing e harmony right now and it's interesting)

The role of boy nerd versus girl nerd (boy nerds are very in fashion with Juno and Superbad, but the girl nerd is always a girl that goes from nerd to pretty in a makeover and starts being a typical girl) Where are the video game playing, LOTR lovers with vajayjays!?

1. I second the Girl Nerd love.

Other topics for you:

2. Do you feel stressed to keep up with all your pop culture commitments? Movies, TV, music, books? I think that would make an interesting article.

3. The sudden hipness of the "green" trend. Case in point = I followed a guy on the interstate for two or three miles this evening with lots of socially conscious/save the planet type bumper stickers ... plastered all over the back of his Ford F-350 DIESEL.

4. Underappreciated movies that you think everyone would love if they just sat down and watched.
