Anybody have any experience making their own clothes without using a pattern?
I'm asking 'cause I have the picture in my head, and I have no idea if I'll be able to find a pattern that matches the picture.
This might also be a good time to mention that as far as knowing how to sew goes - well, not so much. Still, I'm sure I can learn. Fast.

my suggestion: look at the seams on your clothes. See how they look. Imagine them not sewn together.
You can usually get pretty close to what you want. The only thing I haven't been able to make yet without a pattern is pants. because of the whole crotch thing. they are difficult.
I suggest drawing out what you want therefore getting a good visual picture and work from there.
I actually quite prefer working without a pattern. I've found that the patterns I look at don't have the flair I'm looking for in clothing.
let me know if you have any more questions. i'm not great when it comes to sewing but i can muddle through.
good luck!
PS. you can also just piece together different pieces from patterns but that gets a bit difficult as you are working with different patterns.

I will have to think about this some more.

are there any clothes in your collection that you wouldn't mind ripping the seams out of to get an idea of what the fabric should look like before you put it together? that works for me alot.

I needs to have some sort of straps (in my mind I see spaghetti straps, but I would be willing to go thicker on those), empire-waisted, then just kind of flowy to just above the knee.
In my head, it looks really simple. I think I may just go out, pick up the fabric, and see how it goes. :)
