The air had been cold and dry for months. It was charged with static electricity as the Shinigami had noticed. Little sparks would zap their bodies with the slightest of movements. Rangiku has turned such phenomena into a game of harassment toward Ikkaku and his vulnerable bald head. Yumichika had thought of the quiet and tense air as an outward manifestation of the spirits of those assigned here from Soul Society. A war was ready to erupt at any moment and the slightest spark, just one misguided move, would set the entire battle into motion. He waited for it, eagerly anticipating when Fuji Kujaku would taste blood and paint the air crimson.

For now, he stood before a window in Orihime's apartment with a mug of steaming tea nestled between his hands. The owner was being held captive by traitors while Hitsugaya led Ikkaku and Matsumoto-san on a team expedition to the local market. They were to collect the ingredients for a human beverage seen on television. Hot cocoa, if Yumichika remembered correctly. He declined the invitation to tag along; cold air tended to quickly dry out the skin.

He lifted the mug to his lips, blowing the steam away before taking a sip. Looking past his own reflection, he watched the stillness outside. The street was lined with parked cars and only the occasional few crept through. Pedestrians hidden beneath layers of clothing waddled upon the sidewalks in a hurry. He didn't know why. As he contemplated the places they could be going, small white figures began to fall from the sky. Yumichika blinked and leaned closer to the window for a better look. He'd never see this before. So this was snow?

Karakura Town hadn't seen one flake of snow since the start of winter and now, finally, it came. The gradual fall quickened, snow descending strong and steady. Given the pave, it would take only a matter of minutes before the roofs and streets below were covered in a blanket of white. It was a quiet storm indeed. Chaos would soon ring out in this stillness. he opened the window and stuck his hand outside. Flake by flake fell upon his graceful hand, stinging it with their icy chill.

Cold and so very beautiful.

Studying the various shapes and intricate patterns of snowflakes on his fingertips, Yumichika pulled his hand back inside and balled it into a ruthless fist. The snow smelted in his palm.

"It has finally begun."
