we're leaning towards Kyoto for sure (just by reading up, etc.), we'll be flying into Tokyo, so while there, we'll want to probably see a few things... we're v. interested in cultural and historical types of things... thanks!

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the jrp is anyway, i have no idea what the city passes are. any way you can save money... DO IT! JAPAN. IS. EX.PEN.SIVE. I recommend having at least $400 to $500 for travelling expenses (more if you plan on using the Bullet Train for more than the one round trip between Tokyo and Kyoto), $60 per person per day for food, $100/150 per person, per night for a hotel room if you are staying at a well-known place (places frequented by foreigners), $60 if you are staying at the places the Japanese normally stay at. Note, this is USD, I'm not sure where you are from.
