Etsuo Kitase is a laid back type of guy. He has a receding hairline, but he maintains his big bushy mustache, his pride and joy. He's classes are generally boring and not too strict. Still, most of the students have mutual respect towards him, knowing he has mechanical heart.
Having a fake heart does come is it's disadvantages, but Kitase is still healthy enough to teach. He is very fond of books, and when he reads in class, he makes a sort of hissing sound which he is now known for.
Kitase is widowed. He has a few kids who are now all grown. He lives alone.
