Fender, Roland, and BOSS sign on as sponsors for the upcoming Rock Band game. That means the game peripherals will be Fender "guitars," Roland "synths," and BOSS "pedals." Although there is good news in that you'll be able to use your Guitar Hero controllers with Rock Band.

Just the idea of forming a band with friends online and jamming with them sounds completely awesome, regardless of anything else. It would make sense if Roland provided the drums (as well as synths, maybe), since they're one of the main players in the electronic drums market. Probably just a simple series of pads. But all this just sounds TOO ambitious. If there's accessory overload, no one's going to want a full practice set-up in their home for this game. Right? (OK, I might)

I really admire the company, and like that they're reaching for increasingly ambitious, well-produced projects while maintaining a genuine, apparent love of their product and of music in general. But damn. Rock band smells like their Icarus project. (It also, incidentally, sounds like a good opportunity to sell hundreds of dollars of components to each consumer.) I have my doubts about the game.

On the other hand, I thought similar things about Karaoke Revolution and GH, and was shocked to find how much I enjoyed them both. (The latter was a little more palatable for everyone to get into. KR required vast quantities of alcohol to get my friends playing.)

Man. I still kind of miss Amplitude. And Frequency. I should go back and play those....
