I know that your powers of retention
Are as wet as a warthog's backside
But thick as you are, pay attention
My words are a matter of pride
It's clear from your vacant expressions
The lights are not all on upstairs
But we're talking kings and successions
Even you can't be caught unawares

They met in the shadows in the dark of the night. It was sad that they had to do it in such a cowardly way, but there were enemies out there that wanted to see them dead. Even at this stage where he believed he was most powerful, he didn’t feel the need to take unnecessary risks. Unnecessary risks had almost been his downfall on more than one occasion and it didn’t take a genius to see that he was going to have to be careful even now because just one chink in his armor, just one tiny, insignificant hole in his defenses and everything could come crashing down.

He surveyed his mildly loyal companions through the wavering beams of the candles dispersed throughout the room. It irked him that he knew he couldn’t trust at least one of them. He wanted to have nothing but unwavering loyalty surrounding him because anything less could be used against him, but now was not the time to be throwing away any useful pawns either.

“So what’s your grand plan this time?” Her voice was sarcastic as always and had he not had a use for her she would have been dead and left by the wayside long ago. But he did have a use for her and so he was going to have to deal with her lip.

“That is really none of your business.” He responded coldly. Didn’t she realize that he held her heart in his hands? Didn’t she know that if she ever wanted to so much as dream of being free that she should at the very least pay him some form of lip service? Granted, he was never going to let her be, and she very well might suspect that, but it was still very unintelligent of her. And it was just one more way that made his long for the day when she would outlive her usefulness and he could get rid of her once and for all. “But since you asked so nicely…”

He took a deep breath and looked over the three he had brought before him. One acting only because she had no other choice, one with a loyalty that would have inspired him had he not grown to distrust everyone and everything, and one who should not even be alive and who only acted when he said to act because he was the one controlling the puppet strings.

“There is only road which we can take from this point, and there is only one person standing in our way.” He began slowly. “If we cannot bring the half demon and his pathetic group of followers than we cannot hope to succeed, so that will be our new goal.”

“What? So we’re abandoning our hunt for the shards then?” She was sneering now, questioning his decisions in a way that never failed to make him see red.

“No, we are merely shifting our primary focus on the one group of people who might be capable of amassing enough power to destroy us. That includes all of us, most especially you.” Now it was his turn to sneer down at her. “I know that you’re not exactly to brightest, but even you cannot think that they wouldn’t kill you on sight if they were given the chance. It benefits us all to take care of our most immediate threat, no?”

She was silent now and he knew that he had struck a nerve. She was not one to admit to her many weaknesses, but even she knew that there was not a chance in any of the many hells of her survival so long as the half demon was out for her blood.

But now came the hard part: Laying out his plan in a way so that even the most imbecilic among them could carry it out to completion without a hitch.

So prepare for a chance of a lifetime.
Be prepared for sensational news.
A shining new era,
Is tiptoeing nearer.

“Where do we feature?”

“Just listen to teacher…” He watched gratefully as she finally settled down, grudgingly giving in to the fact that he was right. It was about damn time, too. Even forced loyalty was better than the uneasy stalemate they had been sharing ever since he had created her.

“The three of you each have your own purposes.” He gestured to each of them in turn. “Kohaku will be used to draw away at least a few of the half demon’s allies. Kanna will stay by my side and give me the insight I need to know when to launch my own attacks, and you, Kagura will be the one to weaken the demon and hopefully separate him from that annoying reincarnation that he keeps with him. If I don’t have to worry about her purification powers then taking care of our little problem will become a much more manageable task.”

She seemed to ponder this for a moment while the other two merely stared blankly off into the distance in the way they were wont to do. Sure, it had taken him this one spectacular failure to learn that giving his minions the gift of free will was not the best of ideas, but at least his one failure was easily manipulated.

“Fine, just let me know when you want me to act, and I’ll do it.” She shrugged angrily. “It’s not like I have any other choice.”

“Oh, but you do have a choice.” He mocked her gladly. “You can always choose death.”

She refrained from commenting on his last statement, instead choosing to jump to the matter of most interest for her. “And what am I going to get out of this bargain?”

“What do you think you will get?”He asked. “With the half demon and that damnable priestess out of the way, then there will be nothing to stop me from amassing the last of the jewel shards. After I get those, I don’t care what you decide to do.”

“So In order to get my freedom, all I have to do is help you kill one measly little half demon?” She sounded suspicious, and she had every right to be. It was a deal that was too good to be true. He knew that she was not going to be living through his obtaining the jewel and deep down he was sure she knew it as well, but if she still could hold onto that one sliver of hope, then she could still prove to be a valuable asset.

I know it sounds sordid,
But you'll be rewarded,
When at last I am given my dues.
And injustice deliciously squared…
Be prepared!

The days drug on and he was not coming any closer to being able to fulfill his new goal of taking out the half demon and his companions. Of course, he had never thought it was going to be easy. He was not one to underestimate his enemies. Trial and error had taught him that, but his troops were getting uneasy. They wanted action, or at least, two of them did. The third member was too far gone to care about much of anything unless he was given a specific command to do so.

He knew that she wanted to kill him. He knew that she was to the point where she would take whatever freedom she could, even if it were a life of running from the enemies she had made in his service. She wasn’t the type to wait around patiently, and, more to the point, neither was he. But as tempting as it was to just throw his plan into motion, he knew that he was never going to win that way.

There had to be a weakness. There had to be something in each of them that would allow for him to sneak in and rip them very literally to shreds. He just couldn’t find it for all of them.

The demon slayer was easy. All he had to do was throw her dearest little brother into her path and she would crumble like a house of cards. The monk was an easy target, too. A swarm of poisonous bees would render him useless, and should he choose to attempt to help he would end up dead. The little kit was nothing more than child’s play and could hardly be considered a threat, but it was those other two that he couldn’t seem to be able to find weaknesses for.

He knew there had to be something, and as soon as he found it, he would swoop down for the kill, but until then he was just going to have to bide his time and make his minions do the same. Everything was riding on this and he had been waiting far too long for his victory to let it sink out of sight now just because he had become a little impatient. Besides, other players were coming out of the woodwork, and he was not a man to stand idly by while a pack of wildcards assembled on the sidelines.

And so he waited while his wind demon doubted him and plotted against him. It was all going to be worth it in the end.

Of course, quid pro quo, you're expected,
To take certain duties on board.
The future is littered with prizes,
And though I'm the main addressee,
The point that I must emphasize is,
You won't get a sniff without me!
So prepare for the coup of the century…
Prepare for the murkiest scam…
Meticulous planning,
Tenacity spanning,
Decades of denial,
Is simply why I’ll,
Be king undisputed,
Respected, saluted,
And seen for the wonder I am!
Yes, my teeth and ambitions are bared,
Be prepared!

“You can’t honestly expect to get something for nothing.” He was beyond angry this time around. He was used to her stepping out of bounds. He was used to her questioning him openly and in her thoughts, but with the stress of his coup looming over head, she finally played on his last nerve. “Certain tasks must be performed before we can gain the upper hand that we need to be victorious.”

“You keep saying that.” She complained. “It’s been months and you haven’t done a single thing as far as the half demon in concerned. In fact, the only thing you’ve been doing is sending me on pointless missions that turn up nothing in the end.”

“There are prices to be paid for world domination, and for your freedom.” He muttered darkly, not in the mood to be dealing with her rebellious ways at a time when he was loathe to admit that he hadn’t the slightest clue how to proceed. “Sitting around plotting my demise is not the way to getting what you want.”

She sputtered indignantly for a moment while he watched with thinly concealed amusement before deciding that gloating was a much better idea.

“What? You thought I didn’t know?” He chuckled lightly to himself. “I might not know every little thought that goes through your head, but I can sense murderous intent when all you do is glare at me whenever we are within sight distance of each other. Haven’t I told you to be patient?”

She nodded demurely, the very picture of apology, but he could still see the fires of rebellion flaring in her crimson eyes.

“What do you hope to accomplish once I am dead?” He asked, more to himself than her. “If I am dead and am not allowed to accomplish what I have set out to accomplish, then where will you stand in the world. Sure, you’ll be free. I suppose there is that, but at what price. Why can’t you see that by following me I can give you everything you have ever dreamed of and more?”

She nodded once more as though she understood, but once again he could see the fire in her soul and he knew that he had not won over her heart… Which was just fine with him. As far as he was concerned she was beginning to become dead weight with her anger and bitterness holding her back. He once again promised to himself that he would get rid of her at the earliest convenience.

But that didn’t matter for now, he thought to himself as she went out one more time to do his bidding. The time was drawing nearer. He could feel it in the air. The tide was finally going to turn in his favor, and he was more than ready for it.

He was more than ready to reap his own rewards, and nothing was going to stand in his way.

Nothing…

Yes, our teeth and ambitions are bared,
Be prepared!
