Song: Honor by Atreyu
Pairing: None
Warnings: Blood
Resolute a stance of defiance
Always teetering on the brink
Nothing can hold you back when
WHEN YOU'RE NOT HOLDING BACK A THING
Open arms we embrace tomorrow
Closed fists, tarnishing today
We're not afraid to open our mouths and scream:
WE BELIEVE IN WHAT WE SAY
It took some time but they all came together in the end. Five of them had been friends from the beginning and had been fighting this battle the longest. Three of them had been friends for even longer than that, pack mates bound together in a way that outsiders could never understand. And there was one that had come alone, driven by his anger and by the need to see the world rid of the one force that could challenge him.
Apart they had been nothing more than small bee stings against the evil’s thick hide. They attacked sporadically and weakly. None of them communicated and when one group managed to find a weak spot, the information was not shared and thus the weak spots were shore up quickly and efficiently before they could be attacked again. The enemy was anything but stupid and it learned from its mistakes, something the others had been unable to do up to this point.
But now they were here and united at last. Each one had sworn to fight to the death for people they didn’t like. They all knew that this was their last chance. The jewel was about to be assembled and once that happened they would be wiped out quickly and surely. If they did not win on this day, all would be lost.
The band of five who had been the main driving force stood at the forefront. The pack of wolves took the right flank, each one flexing their claws impatiently, ready and willing to get to the heat of battle. The loner stood off to the left, ready to lay down his life so that this menace before them would be taken down once and for all. All of them knew the price to be paid for failure would be their very lives, and yet none of them stepped down.
Within the group of five they each had their separate goals. The collective driving force that had lead them so far to finally come to this place stemmed from personal desires that raged deep within them.
One fought for honor.
One fought to live.
One fought so that a loved one would get a second chance at life.
One fought for vengeance.
One fought for love.
On the wolf’s side there was a solid resolution between them. They were doing this to protect their pack. They were doing this to protect their futures. They were doing this because it was their duty to rid the world of its biggest threats so that their people could live in peace. They were doing this because to stand idly by while the world turned was not their way. They were doing this because their pride as warriors told them it was right.
They were doing this because they wanted to help.
And the loner had his reasons, too. Reasons known only to him because he was not in the habit of confessing his secrets to anyone. In a world in which demons were constantly fighting the status quo, confiding in someone else would certainly be your downfall, but that view was constantly being changed now. For a man who had fought change for hundreds of years, he was accepting this gracefully. He used to fight only for himself, but now…
Now he was fighting for someone else.
Like a whisper to the dusk
An oath against the shadows, denying the dark
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT 'til the break of dawn
Like a prayer unto the dawn
In arms against the shadows, destroying the dark
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT 'til the break of dawn
They were not going to give up. There was nothing left to live for if they didn’t succeed. Even running away would be a sure way to die. The enemy would not rest at coming into his desired power. He would hunt down every last bit of opposition and he would crush it underneath his thumb. They knew there would be no leaving this field of battle should they lose, and that made them all the more resolute in their dream.
When the only option you have is dying, then living seems much more important.
Blackness poured out of the castle in front of them and they waited on their hilltop. Standing side by side they watched as the darkness crept towards them. Their unflinching gaze took in the army of monsters they would have to cut their way through in order to reach the demon’s inner sanctum to deliver the final blow. Alone, they never would have been able to do it, but together they were a force invincible.
They believed this so strongly that they refused to be moved by the show of power from within the keep. They knew he was watching, they could sense his disdain in the tainted air. It was a disdain born of fear, however and each one gathered there knew exactly what he had to fear. He had spent much of time distancing them from each other. He had played his little mind games and they had followed along because there had been no other choice, but now the time for games was over and their minds had been made up. There was nothing he could say now that would break them apart.
There was nothing he could do to send them scattering back into the corners from whence they had come. Now was the time for him to meet the force his foolish games had created. Where once the seeds of resentment had been sown, there now lay a field of immense power. Standing there side by side they sent him a message just as surely as if they had shouted it across the field for him to hear loud and clear.
They were here and they were going to fight.
No running and no fear.
When the sun came up again there would either be victory or defeat.
And they knew which one they were fighting for.
Covered in sweat and blood
Yet still our heads held high
Actions have consequences
When you live for foolish pride
Been careful not to lose ourselves
Stand together one passion, one hate
We believe in a better tomorrow
We believe in WHAT WE SEE
Things were not going well for the demon and he knew it. He was running out of fodder and they were still fighting their way towards him. Only two had been forced to drop out of the fray due to injuries. The young kit that had been with the group of five had been burned by a flaming stream that had been shot from one of the castle walls and he had been forced to retreat to miles away where he could await the end of the battle in peace. Also, one of the wolves had taken a large gash to the stomach and he had been tasked with watching after the kit when he proved too injured to carry on.
Their clothing was ripped and torn. Whites were stained red and a grimy soot covered their faces as they continued to fight their way forward, never losing sight of their goal. The castle loomed closer and closer as they grew stronger from their efforts instead of weaker.
The demon had to be destroyed. He had played with their lives and the lives of others for too long. Too many had died and suffered because of him and many more were slated to die if they did not succeed. The cries of the innocent fueled them on as they pushed as hard as they could against the forces that opposed them.
It was a grim effort, and one that they were fated to lose by the practiced eyes of any fighting man. They were so few and the enemy was so many. It was easy for them to get lost in the shadow of the castle before them. It would have been easy to get so caught up in the fight to survive that they would run in fear in the hopes that regrouping would be a better plan than this suicide mission, but they didn’t allow themselves to focus on the present.
In each other their minds stood a picture of the future.
They would be able to be together with the families they had lost and not worry about never living to see tomorrow.
They would be able to leave the past behind and travel down a path all their own with whomever they chose and never have to see the ghosts that haunted them again.
They would be able to stand tall in front of their peers and know that they had gambled it all to keep those they cared for safe and happy.
They would be able to find their way in a world that was rapidly changing and maybe even learn to finally bend.
But most of all…
They would be able to look themselves in the eye and know that they had changed the world.
Like a whisper to the dusk

FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT 'til the break of dawn
Like a prayer unto the dawn
In arms against the shadows, destroying the dark
FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT 'til the break of dawn

In the throes of battle it was hard to see who make the break in the wall first, but once the giant crack was seen they had no trouble coordinating an effort through the din to break it down. At long last they stood on the threshold of the beast’s home. There was not going to be escape this time and the demon knew it. He was going to throw out all he had to protect his domain just the way they were giving it all they had to keep moving forward. It was a contest of wills as well as bodies and both sides were stacked favorably.
Peering into the dark confines of the lair they had been searching for, they didn’t feel even the slightest bit of apprehension. They knew what had to happen. They knew who had to go forth to fight this battle while they faded into the background and wished them the best while trying to protect their backs.
It was the priestess from the future and the half demon who thought no one would ever love him that held the keys to the future they were striving for with each swing of their weapons.
The chosen pair disappeared into the darkness and those left to turn the tide of battle offered up a prayer for them. There was not much they could do at this point but hope that they would succeed, and they knew that victory was the only thought on their minds as they navigated the twisted turns that made up the mansion before them.
The night stretched on before them and the first dregs of weariness crept into their bodies, but not into their souls. The effort would kill them for sure, they thought as they continued to bite and scratch and fight with everything they had to hold the enemy at bay and to give their last hopes the time they needed to do their jobs. The effort would kill them but they would die happy, even gratefully if only they could live long enough to see the sun rise on the world they were fighting for.
When the sun rose there would be a world of light stretching out in front of them, or there would be a world of darkness. At this point it could go either way, but they were going to live to see it. To either die with guilt or pride. Either one was a sin… Something they had been told not to wish for, not to hope for, and not to want…
Sins that you should not pray for…
But they were praying for pride.
And when everything was said and done and they could look each other in the eyes and see comrades know that each one had done his or her part to stop this evil in its tracks, their peace would be there whether the world had peace or not.
And as the sun rose…
Victory came…
We'll fight our battles
We'll wage our wars
Settle the score with honor and blood
We'll wear our scars like medals of hope
LIKE MEDALS OF HOPE, LIKE MEDALS OF HOPE
