[ WHY? / half-coherent argumentation / PG13 / my writing style ]
WHY THIS PAIRING?
Or better yet, why JapanxChina is the best.
Please note that I'm not quite the idealist enough to believe that I can change your opinions (personal or political or pairing-esque) with a simple essay. However, I do hope to shed some light on my own thoughts and feelings when it comes to this particular pairing, especially with my nationality (I'm Japanese, and a few of my family members are quite the military fanatics...), so please don't be offended by my judgments or comments. This is about two make-believe characters, but it's also about people as a whole, and how Hetalia really can be (like everything else) a microcosm for the world.
...Now, if only I could use that word (microcosm, I mean) right... XD
First and foremost, the two of them have got more history with one another than any other nation. But I think that I stressed this enough with Half a Millenium, where I incuded some 50-plus historical events, all of which made them uniquely intertwined with one another further and further. More than simple interaction however, there are moments in history (*cough* Russo-Japanese War *cough*) where Japan seems ready to give life and limb to conquer (and then keep) China. Granted, that's not very 21st-century romantic, but back then, romance was different, to say the least. Not-to-mention the fact that Japan also wanted all of Asia, but statistically, looking at the resources (time, money, and people) it poured into its imperialist goals, China-related things beat everything out by a long shot.
But the second reason why I support JapanxChina whole-heartedly is because no one else is better suited. I mean, the two countries have run-ins in history with nations like England and Russia and Korea and... Greece. Well, maybe scratch the last one (because seriously: an embassy is all the connection that Japan and Greece have and again: seriously? an embassy being in Japan is only shared by 55-plus other nations; Germany has a better chance of being historically-paired with China than Japan and Greece...), but again, that's just personal opinion. Anyways, those mentioned nations had maybe five, fifty, or even five hundred years of history, but that is nothing compared to the over-3,000 years of history that China and Japan share. If Hetalia were a perfect representation of all historical events (and the nations were not just shameless, faithless sluts, of course), then I feel that it would be safe to say that Japan and China would be a couple, homosexuality or no.
Finally (I'm sorry, but I just love having the one-two-three pattern and pairing of argumentation, I guess I just never quite grew out of middle school...), Japan and China HAVE SO MUCH POSSIBILITY. And I'm not talking OOC possibilities either, I'm talking about IC, IH (in-character, in-history) possibilities. I mean, you can only go so far with pairings like EnglandxJapan and RussiaxChina (ironically, I like these pairings too *brick'd to death*) because those pairings cannot quite hit the whole spectrum of delights and despairs--not as well as JapanxChina can at least. I mean, can you really have equivalent power-struggles, noncon, and gay-lolita-ing? I think not, particularly the last example, because Yao is just made to be uke and England/Russia are both waaayyy younger (as societies, not floating masses of land, mindyou) than both Japan and China, making the whole of the kink/preference moot. But there are way more possibilities for JapanxChina outside of those mentioned, such as fangirling (or boying, in this case, I guess), ink brushing, silk dipping, body-part-rearranging, kink-writing, study-cramming, letter-carving, and crossdress (in hanfu and kimono, of course), just to name A FEW. Which creates a theoretically endless possibility of fanfiction and fanart, which is what I'm hoping to tap into one day.
