aye, i wouldn't advocate getting a hummer, that's for sure.
I still think if I was purely going for gas mileage, i'd be looking at some manner of diesel car, not a hybrid in their current form.
My old 306 used to get an average of 47.7mpg (Imp) and i didn't drive that particularly efficiently (i have seen individual tank mpgs of 58, which i think equates out to 48mpg US)
I know there have been a lot of advances in the tech too, including startstop engines and the like.
I think personally I'd go with the car that was comfiest to sit in, had enough space for what you need and drove the best. All questions I can't answer
