Sushi - I knew some of it, but mainly the common sense/good hygiene ones. The soy sause and backwards sticks I didn't know. Then again, I've never eaten sushi in a group so I wouldn't have had the experience anyway.
As for the spelling, where do I start? The 'simplified English' is stupid. I had to re-read words because my brain just didn't understand. It works in theory, but I think it's a terrible idea in general. It tells the students that it's ok to take the easy way out. How does that help them?
Generally, alot of reading seems to help. Once you're used to reading books, it just becomes natural for you to "know" when something is spelt or used wrongly.
I never knew why I was so "good" at English when I was younger, but I guess it might be because I devoured books at a book a day (and sometimes more) when I was young. I finished off the Famous Five, the Hardy Boys, the Enid Blyton set of books, even some Nancy Drew before I began biting into bigger books like the Neverending Story (damn I want to re-read that.. it's such a rare book!)
By then it was like... "English? What do you study for that?" *looks blankly at friends* "It's all common sense isn't it?"
but regarding the English one, I know where you're coming from. there's a person at the Digimon forum I frequent, saying she's from Singapore and I'm just so embarrassed for her, because she can't spell properly. I hate people who use excess of short form or abbreviations in forums.
Hey sweetie! Just read that sushi article. Um... some of it is total bunk! Just sayin that what I saw, when I lived in Oita-Ken, Kyushu for three years, that the Japanese around me did the following
