I've found the reverse to be true: the sort of quiet people whom I have found worth the listen tend to require that I talk to "prime the pump" or get them going. If I am silent, they remain silent as well. So in my experience, to be a successful listener, I have to talk, even if it means I had to prep "small talk" ahead of time to catalyze my opportunities to listen.
Odd how you and I must utilize opposite means to accomplish the same thing, eh?
Not as odd as we might think, given our differing social natures/approaches-- your overt, my covert-- as the force and means of intensity has a great deal to do with things.
