Richard needed to get out of Alaska. The sun was staying out longer and longer, and he was running out of product to sell. So he began to plan his exit. South and west anywhere first, destination later.

Tom was starting to notice Richard's aversion to sunlight but wasn't thinking that much of it. Instead he found out all that he could about boat from Alaska to California.

Typist: Has there been a string of random deaths?

Richard continued doing quite well selling, until he finally announced he'd been called away on business, unexpectedly, and would be leaving.

T: About one a month, give or take, since Richard arrived.

Tom was still trying to find an excuse for himself.

Finally, it came down to the week Richard planned to leave. Tom hadn't seen him all day, but that evening, he came in and said, "So. Planning to come, still?"
