Yet another AU.

They were, by the sound of things, being attacked. Richard was below, as per usual, assisting the surgeon because his bit of medical knowledge was enough to make him more useful in the infirmary than on deck. At present, the confused shouts led them to believe it was pirates, but Richard was trying to ignore it, because panicking wouldn't help

Tom wasn't exactly the best pirate in the world but he was good at fighting people. He was also especially skilled at getting below decks quickly to scout out what sort of cargo there was to be had. He was trying to do that now, although there were some stubborn sailors getting in his way that he kept having to fight. If anyone was actually close enough to listen they would hear him muttering sorry with each sword thrust.

The most recent explosion had thrown the surgeon against the wall, knocking him on the head and into unconsciousness. This left Richard the only fully functional man in the room, when Tom burst in, and he was clearly unarmed - in his shirtsleeves and waistcoat, and holding nothing but bandages.

Tom did burst in and spent a moment or two looking rather confused before addressing Richard. "Do you surrender?"

Given that Tom was armed and he was not, Richard made a snap decision. "Yes, I do." He paused, then asked, "...may I keep tending the injured men?" There were three who had made it to the infirmary, plus the unconscious surgeon.
