NFLog: Week 5 picks

Oct 10, 2010 10:10

Big NewsSo it's no longer breaking news but the Patriots traded Randy Moss back to the Vikings (his original team) for a 3rd round pick next year. This id definitely cheap for Moss who adds a vertical dimension to the Pats passing game that lets them do everything else they do. Without that threat I'm not sure they will be as effective an offense ( Read more... )

6-6 with Sunday night and Monday night games to go.

Saints :-(. I've written huge amounts in e-mail today to Brad and Jarrod, so won't replicate it here. Might post on my own LJ later.

The Saint weren't really firing anyway on offense but without Reggie Bush they are a different team. He opens up their offense. Couple that with the loss of Pierre Thomas and no one to really fill in like last year with Mike Bell and the Saints will struggle a bit.

They gave away the game to the Cards, but it is only early in the season. It is more important how you play in the last 8 games than the first 8 as you get the chance to work on things and build on your mistakes.

Remember that in today's NFL every team is a new team each year. Unlike the dynasties of the past like the Cowboys, 49ers and 70's Steelers. Just because you have mostly the same team (like the Saints did) doesn't mean the league isn't an evolving league each year. So this years Saints cannot build on what they did last year, they need to make their own history.

Can they do it? Who knows. At the moment they are looking up at Atlanta and even the Bucs are playing pretty well, but the season is really just getting started.

So, with the Chiefs going down (no more undefeated teams) I guess it's time to watch and see when the teams with no wins will get one (if they get one). Both Buffalo and Carolina have byes next week, so San Fran gets the chance to get off the mark against Oakland. Week 7 Carolina plays SF, so one of the two of them has to win (unless they draw - they do have draws in the regular season, right? Like after 1 OT?). Buffalo has Baltimore, so that seems unlikely.

Buffalo's best chance is probably against the AFC East. I know all those teams are quite good but divisional matches give you opponents you are familiar with. They played both the Pats and Dolphins close already.

I'm not sure the 49ers can beat Oakland. They just don't have the precision element of football down, and I'm sure they are starting to lose confidence and with that they will start to lose their greatest strengths - fire, enthusiasm, aggression and motivation.

The Panthers haven't been playing that bad but it will probably take a bit with a new QB. Also I saw that Matt Moore got some snaps so I'm not sure if Clausen was injured or pulled yesterday. 49ers v Panthers is probably the first time for either of them to get a win.
