There is a house by the sea
Two jealous sisters, they're waiting for me
And one is laid on the floor
And one is changing the locks on the doors
And I've been buying the time on my knees
And I've been selling their blankets to bleed (on)
Around the house by the sea
The scent of roses and raspberry leaves
And there is smoke in my clothes
Too much time with just smoke in my nose
And I've been making the meaning they lack
And I've been burning that book they come back too
There is a house by the sea
And an ocean between it and me
And like the shape of a wave
The jealous sisters will sing on my grave
And I've been sparing my neck from their chain
And they've been changing the sound of my name
And I've been dying to rise from their bed
And I've been dreaming our love and our freedom
In February,
greensilver and I drove across the country. On day 2, we woke at 5 AM in Montana and drove through the Rockies at sunrise, which, I am here to tell you: everyone should do that at least once. It was absolutely stunning and just so peaceful. I felt so calm yet so alive. I was listening to my Iron & Wine mix as a nice, mellow soundtrack that blended in beautifully with the scenery and mood. I had watched both seasons of Spartacus in the weeks before we left, so as I heard the line, "they've been changing the sound of my name," I snapped back from my zoned out state and about drove off the road. Because, well, HELLO, SPARTACUS. I regained control of the car and restarted the song. The more I listened, the more lyrics seemed to fit themes from the show. After a few listens, I could see what might quite possibly be a really pretty Spartacus/Sura vid. It made me laugh to say to myself, "Are you really going to vid I&W to Spartacus?" which seemed much like saying I would vid, I don't know, Pride and Prejudice to Linkin Park or something. They seemed so dissonant, but it was worth a shot. (Also, I have now vidded I&W four times. I am so sorry,
beerbad.) I knew I'd have to chop the hell out of the song and rearrange a few lyrics, but it could work.
When I got home a week later, I threw the opening three clips on the timeline and said, "YES, THIS IS HAPPENING" as I flailed over the pretty. (Fortunately,
sweetestdrain agreed.) I didn't touch it again for 3 months, as I was doing Motown Philly and silly things like teaching and finishing grad school. When I finally had time to pick it back up, it fell together fairly easily over the course of a month. The worst part was the neverending waiting for rendering because of all the damn layers and overlays. I couldn't just throw things down and tweak the timing later, since everything was overlapped and connected. This vid was very, very tedious for that reason, but fortunately I didn't have too much to do in the way of restructuring once I got the framework down.
The vision in my head for this vid was basically a continuous overlay-flowy thing, whatever that meant in reality. I hadn't done much with overlays before, and I didn't really know if I could pull it off. But I did know that this vid, if it worked, would look different from my other vids, and that both excited me and motivated me to give it a try. The show itself is absolutely gorgeous, and there were so many beautiful shots I just didn't have room for. Making this vid felt like I was painting with these beautiful colors, blending them together on the canvas in long strokes. I also knew going in that I wanted to use a lot of the time toggle shots that are everywhere in the show, and those worked great with the music as well. (Only one time toggle spot in the vid is manufactured.) In retrospect, I drew a LOT from
bradcpu's "Lightning Field," which uses both fades/overlays and time toggle so well; that is something I very much wanted to emulate. Whether I accomplished that or not, I am very pleased with how the vid turned out. For not having any specific clips in mind at the start, the end result is very much what I saw in my head. Hooray for that.
