This is one issue I'm really proud of Canada for doing right. We have gay marriage, and the courts and parliament and whoever in charge decided, "Okay. We're going to allow this to happen. BUT, if a gay couple approaches a church and the church says, 'well, we really don't feel comfortable with this' then that has to be 100% respected." I think that is the most intelligent, sensible and level-headed judgement to come out of government since Roe Vs Wade.
And I think that Canada's way of handling it would end up the best for everyone involved, bigots aside. After all, this country is supposed to be all about "separation of church and state" (recent religious fundamentalists deciding national/state policy aside), so the government (on whatever level) should allow marriage, with all the benefits, but make it abundantly clear and unalterable that churches cannot be forced, for any reason, to marry anyone they feel they can't due to their religious creed. (Considering that's already the case now, regardless of whether or not it's a law.)
Except where their religion says they should interfere with everyone else. If you try to suggest otherwise they get all satan on your ass and "zomg you must respect"
