Huh - the Kitchener-Waterloo riding's conservative MP won by a mere 0.12% of the vote share.

That's frustrating.

It almost makes me want a two-party system, except that I don't, really - I just want more parties to the right of the spectrum so we can get that end of things properly splintered.

I agree in principle, but what would that look like? I like the idea of proportional representation for various parties in parliament, but i don't understand how these parties would link to local ridings any more. Would ridings send more than one MP in order to get appropriately representation ratios? Would we no longer work with a riding-based system? If so, how would we decide how many seats there are in parliament, and how would we elect people to those seats, and who would they be representing?

I'm sure there's a bunch of theory out there on this subject. If you have some good links, pass them on.

Damn, that sucks.

It's ridiculous how much of campaign electoral strategy is about getting out the people who already like you, as opposed to convincing people that they should like you. I wonder if that was a problem here, since this wasn't the result I expected from the polls.

It is depressing to see how politics devolves to an increasingly content-free rah-rah-ism.

Would democracy be possible with NO political parties at all? What if everyone was an independent? I suppose there'd just be too many candidates for important offices if that were the case. Even if we limit running for PM to people who were already MPs, that's still a lot of potential people running for that position.
