lenovo (thinkpads formerly ibm) are good. toshiba's not bad. dells are good but their cheapest ones can suck. compaq sucks as do vaios. i've had horrible experiences with hp support. umm, there are some cheap toshibas on amazon.com.

i have a piece of crap used vaio but i bought it for 300 bucks from a friend as a secondary computer so that works for me.
