(araba, i haven't spoiled the book but i can't speak for the comments that might come. if you are still reading twilight, beware...)in short, i discovered that the author of twilight is supposed to be a mormon. erica and i had a conversation yesterday inspired by our respective bits of information about the book and its author. we also talked ( Read more... )

this is on my list..

i plan to read at least one non-school/work related book a month this year.

that is if i can keep my eyes off my kids long enough without fear they will play with scissors, eat hand lotion, smear shit all over themselves (or each other), go emo on a teacher for calling locks, "dread"-locks or flush dora down the toilet for being bad.

omg, k, you will have so many criticisms!

when i read it, it was with the complete and utter understanding that it's horrifying to present a relationship like this to teenage girls and romanticize it. edward walks the line between stalker and savior for the entire story, and he's always like "I will save you! But I could really hurt you! But I won't! Because I am strong! But you should stay away from me! Because I am so bad for you!" It was maddening, and even more maddening that I could feel myself being charmed by him nonetheless. Appalling!

I've only read the first book so I can't comment on everything, but JoAnn finished the whole series this past weekend and said there was some pretty alarming homophobia and anti-abortion stuff too. crazy! and brilliant propaganda.

Edward is hot, and par of his hotness IS his controlling dickness. That's fucked up! but look at him:

yeah, reading this book (and the others) requires you shut off the analytical part of your brain. it's a feminist nightmare. i also reached the same conclusions about abstinence porn. this becomes even more apparent in later books. breaking dawn may well be called breaking sex.

i agree with everything erica says in her comment. edward is THE worst in book two.

Stop. Now. Analytical. Brain. May. Never. Return.

I've read 3 of 4 waiting for the good part my friend assures me is there. Unfortunately all I've found is a strong desire to vomit and a constant wonderment about whether all the fans really want an unequal, male-dominating, passive relationship where you are treated more like child than equal and you believe you are nothing without a man. Is that the true Twilight Complex?

I so want my daughter to be the anti-Bella.
