I'm writing a lot about my brain this week.

Had my intake at DRC today and a f/u with the doctor at the student health center (SHAC). Spent a lot of time explaining how I'm different now. It is bizarre - I've been so apathetic about school, just plugging along out of habit, that I wasn't surprised to find in my research that lack of motivation and apathy are actually psychological symptoms ( Read more... )

You're not making it up.
And brains heal, more than any other part of us.
(Look at Nyx, writing full sentences with words that contain more than 2 syllables! I couldn't do this 2 years ago, when I was acutely ill.)

I know you know the frustration and anxiety involved when you brain won't function up to its usual abilities. Thank you.

Aphasia is quite real, and extremely frustrating.

Go you, the informed patient! :-)

Now that I have accepted it as real, I'm trying a lot less-hard to find words when they are lost and am just saying things like "water block-y thing". My friends and classmates have noticed but I choose to be amused and embrace the whole thing. The reduced stress is in and of itself a good thing too!

I can identify with many of the descriptions you've listed. Although this does make me wish I'd had an advocate in my corner in June of 2010. Instead of all the folks around me writing off my symptoms. I couldn't get anyone to really give a crap about what I've been going through since my blackouts were the direct result of addiction issues. I'm extremely glad you have support and are getting this checked out! There are herbal supplements I know that can be taken which help out with the memory loss and functionality issues.

Good luck! I'm supporting from afar. :)

My husband emailed our naturopath the list of symptoms and we were kinda hoping she could just give me some recs w/o an appointment but she wants to see me. The logistical hassle of scheduling of a visit and the cost make it more than a simple task but I think I might try to get in to see her on Friday.

Thanks!

Been there. Recently. I read your symptoms and recognize where I was, and to a certain extent still am, at after both wrecks. The apathy, word issues, depression, self-doubt. It gets better. It takes a while but it gets better.

What ended up helping me more than anything was going to a cranio-sacral therapist.

I fell while running to the bus on the 3rd day of school. I got a nasty black eye and apparently a concussion as well. I've got something called post-concussive syndrome - an annoying suite of symptoms that has been keeping me running at well below 100%, though I just recently acknowledged it, hence the slew of LJ posts on the subject!
