No idea yet. It hasn't come out for PS2 yet, I found out, but it will soon. In weeks, not months. There's a big queer-player contingent on Fairy (ha ha!), but we'll see who I can gather.
There's two explanations of it that could both be true as two sides to the same story. The first is that it was Square Soft's last chance of making a go at the game industry before they hit bankruptcy, so if it didn't sell it really would be their final fantasy. :p The second is that the original game's producer, Hironobu Sakaguchi, was working at Square and was getting sick of it (maybe not having had a hit), and called what would have been his last go at it before retiring from the industry "Final Fantasy" because he thought it would be.
Why didn't they, for example, use the "From the makers of Final Fantasy" tagline and just call the new one "Fragged Fantasy" or something equally discriptive?
