Out at the dinner last night at the big intersection of Wicker Park, Patti noticed a kitten zig-zagging its way through traffic. At first approach, the kitten was friendly, bu when she tried to pick it up, it ran back into the street, nearly getting run over.  Not wanting to see it get crushed, Patti, her friend, the two occupants of the car ( Read more... )

I have an exceedingly low open of people with outdoor cats in the city.

amen, brother! i have nothing but vile-filled HATE for people who let their cats outdoors in the city. at least 2 people in my building let their cats outside (i'm not sure who), and it's horrible. of course i am mainly concerned for the outdoor cats and their health/safety...but i am also very concerned with the fact that these 2 outdoor cats come up to our patio/kitchen windowsill and TERRORIZE my poor Klaus. fuckers.

there was a far greater problem that arose from the landlord's choice of placement: everything but the-now mangled- head was on the other side of the fence hole!

gross, but somewhat hilarious.

The cat has come and gone. The owner finally called, and when we threatened to not give her back, he all but cried. Just some silly scenester who's lived in the city for a year and thinks cats can still run around free like they did in whatever godforsaken suburb that hatched him. I feel tremendous guilt giving her back, but since the guy had our number there's nothing I could do. What's more, while this cat was incredibly sweet to everyone, I fear that for survival reasons she has probably developed an adversarial hostility towards other cats, and the three goofy fatties I live with are not well suited to defend themselves against a semi-wild animal.

The rat thing did kind of strike me a funny at the time, but neither of the people I was with seemed quite as eager to appreciate the black humor of the situation.

I have to ask, how big would you say the rats were? I wonder how well they ate in that alley. The ones who live near restaurants get huge, but you're a few blocks from any.

With all the construction in the neighborhood (including an old slummy apartment building down the street being converted) the rats have been kind of frisky this year. The first one wasn't that big-like a really large mouse. But the second one, stuck in the fence, was the size of a small dog. I think it mainly lived by eating other rats.
