I have to say, this is the first Hetalia baseball fanfiction (or fan-anything) I've ever seen, which is a little funny considering its reputation as "America's pasttime." But of all the firsts to read, this one was absolutely amazing. <3333 I loved the first paragraph from the dirty fingers trying to grasp at the ball to the blood on the ball from a fallen soldier (that was so powerful I had to read it again).
I also loved the descriptions of the muskets. And the edumacation this gave me: I had no idea that baseball was even around during the Civil War. And clearly you did your research.
Out of curiosity, was it common for men to refer to each other by their last names during the Civil War? The dialogue of the men--though almost poetic in its repetition--sort of reminded me of the forties. But this could just be "A League of Their Own" leaking into my brain. XD;;; Either way, fabulous story.
I'll take a quick guess that the lack of baseball fiction stems from lack of interest in the sport (which kills me since I love it so...) I'm so happy that those few lines were so powerful! <3 I was afraid that it might have been too much info pressed into such a short ficlet... <3
To be honest I'm not entirely sure. I only did a little research into 1800s dialogue and it didn't bring up too many results (perhaps I should have looked for a film instead xD). Thank you very much friend! <333
Admittedly I don't follow any kind of sport at all, but my family used to be Braves fans when I was little, and we went to games whenever they were playing in NYC. XDD So of any sport baseball feels the closest.
And boo, that always blows when you can't turn up enough results for what you need. T.T That's like my pursuit in trying to find Maltese military uniforms for my OC. But now that I read the story again it seems logical, it could be more of a class thing than time period. If I ever see a film from the 1800's though, I'll pay attention to that for you. :3
A Braves fan?! Cool~! I don't know many people (beyond a buncha guys) who actually follow sports but it's okay since I only care when the Yankees have a game. Of all the sports baseball feels the most intimate, even if my family follows basketball more. xD
Oh man does it ever... It's especially annoying when a deadline comes up or if it just happenes to be the very last piece of information needed...
Thank you very very much! <33 If I ever come across anything Maltese related I will send it your way as well (although, to be honest, I'm not sure what country the Maltese military is from... orz)
